Yes Bobalou,

I am getting a nice low end punch that blends in nicely when compressed. Although, I am also getting a little 3d delay on it but that only adds bigness to my sound.

Maybe Jules can elaborate a little more on this theory since I've picked it up after seeing his M149's placed facing the way away from the kit.

I'm also getting a nice sizzle from the cymbals.

I'm also greatful for this thread that you started Bobalou... IMO it's helped alot. Especially being able to check out everyone's OH micing techniques.

Jason

Two pairs of Earthworks mics are used on OH's. A pair of QTC-1's for the softer, more mellow tracks where space, dimension and imagery are a priority. And a pair of SR77's for the louder tracks. We had the QTC-1's up and were getting occasional mic overload on loud passages, so we switched to the SR77 for the loud stuff. The QTC-1's running through the Millennia HV-3D are stunning on drum overheads.

Here's a shot of the POV of the overheads to the drum kit. The OH array is set to 110ยบ ORTF.

Thanks Chris!

(from the last page)

We have producer Gil Norton in for 3 days (Pixies / Foo Fighters) he's working with my junior engineer Tom on some pre prod...

Must drop in to see how they are getting on! Who knows, if they like the studio........

("Ahhhhh".....sound of crashing waves..... "another Mai Tai darling? Shall we have lobster again for dinner"?... AND THEN I WOKE UP! )

If its anything wacky and new I will try to take pictures!

Dan,

That kit is absolutely stunning! It looks like incredibly thought and workmanship went into every last detail. I bet it sounds absolutely gorgeous on tape- what format did you track to, digital of some sort? Any chance we can hear it?

Also it looks like the mics are pointed up and away from their sources (toms anyway), how does that sound versus pointing the mics at the heads?

Yeah, I noticed that two.

Also on the snare. Kit looks very nice btw.

I'd say it captures more of the natural sound of the kit. I hope I'm right if that kits sounds as good as it looks.

I'm really curious to find out how that kit sounds. I'm going to be picking up a new kit sometime in the next year or so as I try to make a real residential whole band set up for myself. I've got a great mmx kit from Pearl, but I think I'm looking for something a lot more natural and warm.

Planet Red...

The kit I miced up a few pages back on this thread...

I used the Recorderman setup.

Although I set my mics at two and 3/4 lenghs away from the snare.

Jason

ps: Do a search on this site for more info on it. There's a really good post on it a few months back.

That kits is a [ there's a link here ----> ] Le Soprano Prima Original hand-made in Italy. Price tag on the drums alone is about $7500. The two ride cymbals are Peter Erskine Zildjians [ with three sizzles ] - the one on the drummers left is a Peter Erskine Left hand Ride prototype. The players all know and have played with Peter Erskine.

BattleAngel, all the mics on the toms and snare are side-address condensers - and are, in fact, pointing towards the tom heads.

Although, not the recording I worked on last week [ where these shots were taken ], there is an MP3 of a song, "We've Got Time" here at this link that uses this Le Soprano kit. There is a CD being released soon of the recordings and we'll also make some MP3's available. The band and my gear set up is still in San Diego and they'll continue recording for the next couple of weeks.

I'll post a link when the CD is available.

[ edited - 320 bitrate MP3's of kit available at http://www.thelisteningsessions.com/jazzooo.htm
Download "NY BLues" and "LizBarber" ]

Yeah I was just looking it up- superbly expensive but I guess some guys just have to sound *that* good. Lord knows I would if I were good enough to justify it ;-)

That clip's not working by the way =( I really want to hear it!

It worked for me.
Very nice track and I like the band.
Shame the MP3 didn't really showcase the kit though.

Got it. Beautiful :-) The drums sound phenomenal but this track doesn't show off the whole kit a lot. Not that it matters- at 7500 I can't afford it. Yet ;-)

I guess that explains why you didn't buy new heads to put on the drums before recording

Those Studio Project's mics look tasty.
Anyone seen or heard the Josephson E22s (side address condensors)?
They were designed in conjunction with Steve Albini and look quite strange.

'64 Slingerland with '53 Gretsch snare. Amazing sound!. Photo taken before we got the room mics up and the sea of mic cables so it looked cleaner for promotional photos. Your "standard" setup - 57 snare, 421s on the toms, D112 on kick, B&O stereo ribbon overhead, 87's in the room

what a great thread! Drummerman that kit is completely dope.

Here is an update on my kit, much learned from this thread and others on this board. Sounds much better and improving all the time!

Updates:

- Ditched SP C3's for a pair of Josephson C42's
- moved rack toms off kick and onto stands
- added subkick ns10 mic
- lost tom mics and replaced with r121 FOK mic
- removed rugs went with bare floor

Fargin eh, thanks guys.

Frighteningly good 15 yr old drummer Ilian Rubin. Tracked two tunes for "get the girl" band today.

Oh my god. This kid is as talented, at 15 as ANY drummer I've seen in the rock world currently. watch out. He taught himself classical Piano as well(started 6 months ago) and guitar.

Fully endorsed by OCDP, Paiste, Vic firth.

fuucker.

Here's his abbreviated kit for this session:
Beta 51, Ns 10, 57's on snare, 87 rack, 421 floor, 414 OH's, Royer 121's room.

No pics now, but if you are ever get a chance to put a good pair of C12A's or C12B's over your kit, it will put a smile on your face.
