Not to sound choosey, but I'd love more pix (and sounds) of minimalist setups (3 mics or less).

You are so lucky to work at those incredible studios... great setup.

BK-5 on hat? really?
how come the woofer-mic on the kick and bass is at an angle like that. i've only done that trick totally on axis. what does going off axis do for you?

From the last couple of days:

Overheads (not visible): 2xBeyer M160 ORTF -> 2xAPI 512, cranked.
Kick inside: NakedEye Roswellite -> Germanium pre -> API 560 EQ.
Kick tunnel: Brauner Phanthera -> GR 500NV, saturated.
Snare: Sennheiser 441 -> Amek C.I.B., touch of HPF.
Toms: Sennheiser 441/541 -> Audient Mico
Room: R121 -> Voxbox pre section -> Distressor in Nuke mode.(pic 3 "kitroom")

The wood board under the kit removed the need for any bottom snare or tom mics. A treble boost on the OH brings out the ride and hihat perfectly.

Yeah, wicked talented. I'm lucky to know them. Check out their myspace soon for some new tunage. I tracked the drums and some of the guitars, and mixed and mastered it...they are really fun to work with.

Corner or Middle Kit Placement

So some people have the kit set up in a corner and some have it in the middle of the opposing walls. Is there a reason to set up drums in a corner?

LOL, my middle of the room is a corner.

I think for many, setting the drums up in the corner is a space issue.

Here's some from a recent session I did at NRG.
The kick tunnel also had a few layers on top of it,
dense rubber, blankets, and a few rugs.

Well, normally it kind of sounds like a cannon, but the kick that the
drummer was using didn't have a "note" really. I had a U47fet at the
end of the tunnel and it did give the kick some nice body and low end.

not trying to hijack the thread but what is the main advantage of using a kick "tunnel"?

is it a better kick projection? does it reduce bleed?

In my case, I was trying to get some distant sound without too much bleed from other drums.

It helps reduce the bleed so you can put a LDC a few feet away. I like the
low end that it picks up plus you usually get more of a note.

Bobby Jarzombek in studio this week.

Here's a few pics, from Bobby's set up this week, while recording basic tracks for the new "Riot" Ep.
Real simple set up.

Last Pair of NEW Big Reds ~!

Hey Pan;
Those two speakers are as far as I know the very last NEW Pair of Big Reds on Earth~!
Yep, they were given to me by Dave Berliner, who's father Bob was the designer of the Big Reds.
He was also the founder of the Redco Audio we all know and love.

These 2 speakers were in his attic since new. They were cleaning it out recently and found these, along with sealed boxes of new drivers, and Mastering Lab Cross Overs.

Amazing~!
