Here are some shots from a session I played/engineered a couple of weeks ago in a basement - leather couch for bass trap, bookshelf as a diffusor...

Mics were:
Kick inside: ATM25
Kick outside: Rode NTK
Snare: ATM23he
Tom1: ATM23he
Tom2: ATM23he
OH's: Oktava MK012's
Midroom: Baby Bottle
Far room: AT4040's in opposite corners

The dog in the third photo was honorary tape-op.

Jared Logan.

He records bands at my studio when he's not at bible college...

I got 2 broken 57's to trade for his safe return to Milwaukee, WI.

Effing small world. Ha.

Hey,

I tend to put the drummer with his back into a corner..

Been doing that for a while...

I COULD put him in the middle of the room, BUT that would kinda 'hog' the space from the other musicians who have to stand in the same room..

I could figure it out...

Any thoughts on 'corners'????

Please have a look at my pictures..

Of cource I need to try it out...

I can on Wednesday, my best drumer chum Ray Weston (Wishbone Ash sessionist) is coming in to overdub on his own to pre recorded backing tracks with his DW setup.

Thinking about it my motivation stems from using them before (corners) and the favorable aspect of my camera / video link....

cjogo,

now the first time you posted your kat/sample response to this thread, of course I had to take a listen to your work... but since you're really trying to drive your point home here a second time with the kat/sample thing, I gotta say (with all due respect) those drum tracks sounded very thin and drum machinie to me the first time I listend.... there is no way I could mistake those as "real" drums or choose them over even a badly mic'ed up kit...not trying to sound like a punk, but the feel or samples just do not have the punch as "real drums"...

I have recorded a complete album playing an old Roland pad kit triggering samples and as proud as I was for fakin out the average listener, whenever it came to someone in the know, there was no foolin em, (I was the first to agree)....thats why I am now recording live drums here at home, and even though I'm a hack, there is absolutley no comparison between playing drums and playing samples!

Im certainly not putting down the use of Vdrums, samples, kats, etc. but if you're "comparing" them to mi'ced up drums as I've asked to see on this thread, I'm sorry but thats a very tough sell for me!

respectfully,

Bobby Loux

I guess it comes down to how it sounds huh? Without hearing your space and the drums in the corner it'd be pretty generalized feedback.

Generally, corners are not as desireable as middle-of-the-room. This is the best approach to recording (most?) acoustic instruments, yes? But in reality a live-to-tape session where the band is in one room usually guarantees the drummer is in the corner, unless the space is huge.

In live shows drummers are usually stuck in the corner or way back against a tight wall. Drummers are used to this, and accept their fate like the dogs we are. Once I suggested trading places with the lead singer but that went over like a sandpaper condom.

I'm pretty sure those are standard XLR cables going into those tom mics, so that would make them U87's as opposed to U67's.

Still a nice sound.

Hey Steve,

Dirt on Jared...

He spilled a bunch of water in our Pro Tools keyboard once. Making it as if you were holding the return key down. It was like this until it dried.

He hates vegetables, but doesn't eat meat. Maybe you can ask him about all the different vegetables he likes....

He used to get into a lot of fights and brawls, but this stopped about 2 years ago. Ask him to tell you some of his fight stories...

You can also mention, he looks like the kind of guy who'd play a Yamaha Beech Custom with a 12" tom and a 15" floor.

I agree,

I have a few virtual kits (real samples) and samplers at home that do a very very good job but... you'll never get it 100% identicle to a real kit. There is no blend or feeling. You can change different velocities and use different miking configurations but you'll never get that true image of a drummer playing a well miked kit.

Jason

ps: I love this thread! keep those pics coming... I'll be adding some shortly

We had fun recording this Yamaha Maple Custom kit...

Two KM184's on OH through two VT737's
504's on toms through API 3124
D112 inside kick though GR MP2-NV
SDU99 outside kick through MP2-NV
SM57 on snare though API 3124
SM81 on hats though TCE Gold Channel
TLM103 for room though TCE Gold Channel

Awesome natural sound.

Jason,

that "maple" kit looks right at home in the kitchen...pass the syrup?

can you elaborate on how you ended up with your overhead positioning, height, width/sprerad, etc.?

great mics and pre's, looks cool!

thanks

In this OH setup, I had enough meat from the snare and toms to have plenty of fun with. Very punchy. I could have managed to put only three mics on this kit although I chose to put more since the style of music was Tool-ish/Evanescence-ish

Both mics were equidistant with both kicks and having the snare centered in the middle.

height: two and 3/4 drumstick over snare and about three drumsticks apart to get a good stereo image of the kit.

SD U99 was very nice in front of the kit. Good combo with the D112 inside the BD about a foot from the beater. (all in phase)

Amazing drummer, experienced studio musician. (big factor for good sound)

Kitchen had good acoustics (My dad always prefers to play his madolin there)

The TLM 103 in far corner facing the wall away from the kit (thanks Jules for this... wish I had your M149's though!) blended in nicely. through 1176 UAD-1 all buttons in.

Anyhow, capturing the two kicks was a first for me. Having them both equidistant in the OH's was most important. The right OH mic is pointing a little more to the snare.

I have the sm81 on the hats although it's not really needed.

Well, that's about it.

Thanks!

ps: those plants in the corner are good bass traps haha

Not to nitpick and be OT...

but somebody, somewhere is absolutely flabergasted as to how you could "this slash that" a band's style with Tool on one side and Evanescence on the other.

I just might be that person. =\

No kidding, Hetero.

BTW- I really want you to check out this album I'm putting together. I think you'll like it since I know you're ga ga over Dredg and I think this album is going to have some of the things you like about their releases.

Well dont then!....

Jason, is that ambient mic in the kitchen giving you more low end punch as apposed to a delayed "3d" type (depth) effect?

thanks to all who have added so much to this thread!..since I started this topic I've been tracking drums here at home and have gained much knowledge!

Jules should post some pics from last nights drum session ... popped over to say hi while he was in a tracking session. According to what I heard they deserve to be posted including a full and detailed explanation of the signal path.

Damn fine sounding drums.

I tried spying on him and I know he took out the dbx from the snare and put in his pultec eq and 1176 at some point but he kicked me out the moment he saw I was taking notes .... tutt
