| This is a very cool thread. What would make it even cooler is if there were audio clips of the drums to accompany the pics so we could HEAR what the assorted set-ups sound like. Hey, does anyone have or know where to find pics of miked up drums from the 1970's? Like, for instance, I was listening to Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder today and really digging the dry intimate `70's drum sound... would be so cool to see of pic of that exact drum session to see the room itself, the kit, the mics, etc. Thanks |

Captures a nice balance, with powerful sounding toms and snare. Good job.

| Thanks for the clips! I really enjoy being able to actually hear how the OH and room mics sound rather than just stare at the pics and wonder. Nice! |

Some bizarre pads, a limp kick and a couple of snare samples?

| Ok....Final clips from my previous posts. One is the far rooms....it goes from soloed to with JUST THE CLOSE mics in...to show you the delay between them. The other is a single 58, over the kick squashed to sh*t with a sweet old EMI compressor. Enjoy. |

And that snare is not a sample? Wow. Have you got a dry mix of just the royer and the sub mic? Cheers, Rich

| hello, Here is some pictures of a drum session I did few days ago. It was for new soul ( dry and close mike drum sound) , funk (jamiroquai-ish songs) and pop ballades. The drummer use his kit in a very spread way from left to right, not that easy to get all the sound from the overhead without having a hole in the center. It's a GMS drums kit, which sounds really nice ! We had 3 GMS snares too. the signal path is: kick in -> RE20 -> Protools preamp kick out-> U87 -> Avalon 737 SD top -> SM57 or Studio projects T3mk2-> Avalon 737 SD bottom -> SM57 -> protools preamp Hi Hat -> Schoeps CMC5 2x racktom -> MD421 -> protools preamp Floor tom -> Senheiser 602II -> protools preamp OverHeads -> KM84 -> SPL Goldmike mk2 Mono Close Room -> TLM103 -> Protools preamp The sound is really nice though, Didn't know the protools preamp x8. It's really clean sounding and I think is worth a focusrite red x4. It's ok for toms and HI Hat but there is a kind of warmth missing in the kick and room mike, but not a real problem. I know it's not the best Preamp bur it's ok. I love the Overhead sweet sound with KM84, hope I'd get a better preamp for this job but this one was better than I thought (put some TI burr brown OPamps in it). The noise floor is ok and the sound is warm enough when you give a good gain. On snare with brushes patterns I put a Studio projects T3 which sounded quite nice. not really expensive and the snare sound is bright and focused. the kick is fat and punchy with the re20 and u87. I didn't want a clicky rocky sound for the style of music we recorded, this way it's perfect due to the flat response of the re20. The Floor tom in itself is amazing but I think the e602 is not a good mic, I put an extra Studioprojects T3 to get a warm sounding and full track. That was far better. I put a a tlm103 in the room, not far from the kit, to get the whole sound. I really like editing the tracks the cleanest I can to gate them , and I blend the gated close mike with the TLM 103 track slammed up to give a bit of the ringing shells tones, noises and over all sustain. To my mind, that's the best wat to get controlled and living drums. I will give you some sound in the next days. |
