He makes amazing kits... keller shells like all the other "custom shops" but his edges, and finishes are so classic.

my fav is a natural satin- you can see em at the Taylor booth at NAMM.

Let me know if you want to check em out... I'm in LA next week, I could drop the Limey on ya for a few days if ya like.

My buddy Matt has built drums for himself for several years now. He's hoping to move in a more commercial direction soon.

This is his newest kit:

The boutique kit market is pretty tuff. I've seen several very good builders struggle for a couple of years before giving up.

It's really easy to buy parts and build your own kit.

Oops, back on topic. stike

I had a session a while back that required two completely different sounding kits; a 2003 Yamaha Recording Custom (birch) and 1965 Rogers (it sounded like oak under the lacquer - LOUD).

The Rogers on the right was miced with EW QTC1s in a jecklin disk as OHs, SM7 on kick, Neumann 563 M7 as FOK, and Neumann U67 as room. No need for snare mic.

The Yamaha was miced with Schoeps cmc6 mk21s as spaced OHs, Royer 121s in blumlein as front center OHs, Beyer 201 on snare, Neumann km184 on HH, Subkick and SM91 on bass drum, MD421s on toms, and U67 as room.

I got your basic radar blipping SMACKfest from the Yamaha kit to cut through GTR heavy songs. The Rogers was a classic sound for the minimal indie rock songs.

Here's a more recent setup that when I brought up the faders in the CR, I got instant goodebumps (which I tried to hide from the client in order to act 'pro'... I should have rejoiced). Good drummer = little to no compression = deep beautiful sound.

Mics were: Neumann km84s (not 184s) in recorderman, Royer 121s in blumlein as front center OHs, Beyer m201 on snare, MD421 on floor tom, Beyer M88s on rack toms, SM91 IBPed with Subkick on bass drum, Senn Shotgun on drummers mouth (funny Brazilian moaned and grunted in perfect time), Neumann 582 omnis as spaced FOKs, and Neumann cmv 582 m7 room.

In the setup above, 80% of the sound came from the km84s. I like using the blumlein Royers because just a little bit of them can center the kit spacially and tonally. I tried the FOK 582s after being inspired by Wwhitman's posts and they delivered a beautiful punchy air around the kit. However, too much of them screwed with the imaging.

While I like putting up a lot of mics, especially when the channels are available *cough*1073s*cough*, I rarely use them all. I like to have options, especially when tracking time is at a premium.

That's what I'm talkin about!

nice RB.

I got to post pauls wood kit's... he's working on his own lug design... that's where it gets pricey for the boutique guys to get truly "custom"

A little clip from a recent session... I was playing a tamburo opera kit (as pictured in a couple of pics earlier in this thread) if anyone likes it I can give some recording details.... I had to convert it from an mp4 to mp3 for maximum compatibility I suppose ....

[QUOTE=cajonezzz]Used the big blue vistalite as a reso kik... 26" of love. suspended a beat98 thru the hole... buttted it up to my 20 " Gretsch.

never heard of the suspension method..........any insights, do i just have to put another (bigger) bassdrum in front of the one i am playing and mic it too?

Recent session - these are the "dining room" drums...

The band is freaking about the sound, so who cares where they were tracked, right?

It's really pretty Ghetto Alexi. Just take any big wide open kik and butt it up to the kik your playing. should have full front head, no hole... tune it to a cool pitch, and feed a mic in... dosent' really matter just experiment that's what I do. The beta 91 was handy and tiny.

have fun!

I love this thread. I didn't get any pictures.. but here's a little clip of some tracking my band started last week. I'm REALLY happy with how it's sounding. I'm sure it'll sound like poo to some of you. Heh. There's a slight bit of compression and some panning on the tracks. No EQ or verb or anything.

Kick - Inside: D112, Just Outside the front head: Studio Projects B1
Snare - 57
Toms - MK319
OHs - MXL 991s in ORTF over the center of the kit... at least something close to it.
FOK - EV635A

All of these were run into my lowly Behringer DDX3216. It was also tracked in my tiny 13X15 untreated room. Tasty.

I'll post the track for this at some point-
this was for a poppy rock thing. The little Zildjian remix ride was placed high and centered by design ( i wanted it sitting front and center, but didn't want to spot mic it )

the rack tom is out to allow varied placing of mics- we ended up using a Rode on snare with a beta 98 clipped to the bottom ( bleifuss snare)

the kik is an old Ludwig Vistalite marching drum- 28 inch. There is a Beta 98 suspended thru the air hole, the 20 inch Gretsch is wide open and has a small hole... the proximity to the bass drum "lites up" the vistalite ( same idea as the DW woofer... only a little wilder) Toms are 9x13 and 11x15. Hats are a 16" thin custom A crash btm, and a cracked and shitty 15 thin customA crash top. washy trashy love.
My fav drummer and good friend Aaron Redfield slammed this track in my stead... allowed me to be "producer guy" . He's amazing- very much a Matt chamberlin type player. it was a fun track!
