Real~!

Mic'ing drums from this distance let's them breathe, and all the sounds from the individual drums blend together, so they sound exactly like they do in the the room. As long as you are happy with the sound in your room, you are good to go.

Obviously, we only got away with this in my small room because we had already tracked the 3 guitars, upright bass, and scratch vocals to a click before hand. Eddie then played drums to these tracks...
And I'm glad we did.

It's amazing how good, no GREAT, drums sound when recorded like this.

As we used to say in Queens NY..

Dat's a beautiful thing!

Love to hear some, any way post a bit?

I had my hesitations at first with the tracking space but really ended up diggin' the sounds we got. There's some leakage from the bass amp and a little bit of screaming in the background but here's the set up:

Kick In - RE320
Kick Out - GAP TC1
Snare -57
Overheads - Studio Projects C4 (omni)
Room - C414 XLS (omni)

All going into a Focusrite Liquid 56. Used mostly Waves SSL and API plugins for processing and a little Oxford transient designing and verb.
sounds nice!

Cheeers!

Sounds great.
I do a very similar thing with a RK bass drum in front, but only have one of the Coles. love to get another and try that position in stereo like you did.
nice job.

Nice.
How better/different is this than using an amp plug?
Any way to solo that track and post it?

thanks,

Thanks mate! It was a bit of a pain, phase-wise. Had to delay my spot mics to get them to sit well. Love having the extra kick as well - it adds some really interesting depth to the tone of the kick. If you ever do the position in stereo, be aware that ypu'll have to be very attuned to stereo imaging, as blumlein is quite wide sounding, and you could very well end up with all the attack of your kick drum in one channel, and it's a right pain to have to correct!

That's my place!

The Bridge Recording

That's drummer Bernie Dresel, warming up for a young Disney Artist basic tracks session. George Doering will be sitting in the chairs, playing guitar, (amps in the iso booth).

This room sounds great with a kit!

snare drum - MD441
floor tom - Beyerdynamic M88
hi-hat - AKG C451EB

FOK went into SCA N72s and everything else into Audient ASP008
Recorded live with guitar so there is little bleed in the tracks

sounds pretty nice but the tuning could be better especially on the kick drum...

Funny you mention that cause 2 weeks ago I did a session with no overhead as well.
Close mics on everything and a XY + mono front of kit and large AB room mics. It sounded great.

I also had the opportunity to make a AB test between a 421 and a CAD M179 on toms, I use 421 all the time at the studio I work at but at home I use the M179 and never compared them before, the M179 won, way less bleed and better tone overall.

Here's 2 super crappy pics of the setup.

Hell yes they did! I use them on toms, kick, and sometimes snare. Love em!
