How good is the pitch correction in the PCM 81?

Thanks

What do you mean by "pitch correction" exactly?
The 81 doesn't do "correction" in the usual sense, e.g. actual pitch correction
like Auto-Tune or an Orville/H8000. If you are asking about the quality of the pitch
change, it's ok- very simple and good for most sources, but not anywhere near as sophisticated as the Eventide stuff.
The Orville/H8000 do true diatonic shifting, formant shifting, auto-correction and just about anything else you could possibly think of, but they also cost significantly more. I love the 81 though, and it aside from its brilliant delays and reverbs it is possible to use it quite successfully for pitch-change with no problems. It really depends on what your source is and what you need to do.

It's vocal pitch correction I am wondering about. eg. if the vocalist is singing off pitch in places and you want to fix it. Can the PCM 81 do that? What pitch correction aplications does the 81 do?

Thanks

Make your life easy and get Auto-Tune. The 81 isn't what you want.

Is there any other box that does vocal pitch correction like Auto Tune but laso has verbs and delays?

What about the Evantide H3000 or H4000?

Thanks

The Eventide H3000 and H4000 are too old to do pitch correction. In my experience, the hardware boxes don't really work very well when compared to the software. In the software version, you normally edit the file in graphic mode and only touch up the notes that need it. This is impossible with any hardware unit. If the vocalist is bad enough that he/she needs it in a live situation, auto-tune wouldn't be able to help anyway.

Trade you Autotune on an iLok for that old 81 you got laying around....

If it can't Auto-tune... then what's it worth?

Correct me if i'm wrong but the pitch algorithms available as an optional card for the pcm80 and factory built in the pcm81 are using the same algorithms that the ones used one the Lexicon 2400 stereo time expander/compressor which was a standard in the broadcast industry 2 decades ago...

You are not wrong, as far as I know.

A whole lot has changed since the heyday of the Lex 2400.

Thank God.

The PCM80/81 as an after-the-fact-correct-on-the-fly device is not even my FIFTH choice for the task.

The "Fix-yer-Vox" preset, and similar programs(imbedded on the 81 and on the FX V1.1 card on the 80) are hit or miss at best, every time I have tried them.

If it's ALL you have, it could be better than nothing with a little luck... otherwise... I'd say... KEEP FISHIN'.

Best regards,

SM.

PS. TC Elec. has a box called the "VoicePro" which does everything but make grilled cheese sandwiches. They also have a coupla smaller versions if memory serves me. Might wanna start by checking there.
