Tonelux for the rest of us..

I know that the whole Tonelux thing has been discussed many times here.. It looks pretty gorgeous..

What I would like to know is..

I would like an honest review from anyone out there that is not on the Tonelux home page.. I am looking for an honest assesment. Has anyone outside the Big wigs (sry guys) have had one delivered and what they like/dont like about it..

I am sure it is a great product but I want a review from the "common man"..

Thanks for listening...

Jim

I'd like to know this, too.

It seems we get the superlatives from the same people, all of whom are featured on the Tonelux web page.

No doubt, Paul Wolff is of pedigree stock and has the chops to deliver the best of the best. But having Thrillfactor or someone like him reporting on the Tonelux products would be extremely valuable. I think I remember reading Walt Whittman was going to be trying them in the next few weeks. Can't get better than that.

No way!

Walt Whitman is going to be trying Tonelux stuff? Legendary American poet Walt Whitman who died in 1892? Now that would be a review worth reading...

Seriously though, I think you mean William Wittman.

Finally Arrived

My Tonelux rig finally arrived--
16 MX2D, 4 FX2+, SM2, & CR2.

In being honest about evaluating Tonelux I must disclose a major negative for which I mean no ill will-- I am just stating a fact. I ordered by Tonelux setup in January. It has taken three months to deliver. In December 2005 I began talking to a dealer with the intent of getting an analog summing bus. I was refered to Paul Wolff with whom I spoke and corresponded via email. The Tonelux equipment sounded great and we settled on a package in early January and I gave a healthy financial deposit with the understanding that I would have a setup in no more than a month!

I am presently in the process of setting up the Tonelux gear with an elaborate patch bay so things are going slow. The quality and craftsmanship is certainly up to expectations. The feel of the knobs and attention to detail is right on. Before my purchase I didn't realize how aesthetically pleasing the color and design was. I really like the butttons and lights. I have noticed that some of the butttons are stickie but I think that the face plate has some type of adjustment screw that changes how it lays. I am confident that this can be worked out.

My original goal was to have an analog summing bus and I haven't put it through any tests yet. What I have noticed is that with 16 balanced inserts on the MX2s and my 4 aux sents I am able to quickly utilize my outboard gear for mixing. The Tonelux workflow actually makes me really appreciate some of the nice outboard gear that I have. I have backlog of stuff to mix and can't wait to get started.

My advice to anyone considering Tonelux is to be patient

It's a little know fact that Walt engineeer some of Cyndi's earlier stuff before turning his attention to the prog rock group Emerson, Hawthorne and Palmer.

Thanks for the laugh (and the correction). I guess they're right when they say drinking and posting don't mix. My apologies to William for the mistake.

Hi
Sorry it's not related to Tonelux but..
Do you mean Emerson, Lake and Palmer? or have Emerson and Palmer had a go with someone called Hawthorne sometime?

Please take my post literarily and not literally.

I guess they're right when they say bad humor and posting don't mix. My apologies to Matt for the mistake.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Arnold Palmer, I think.

it was pretty funny.

I guess there'll be a mad rush for any Tonelux 500 series modules, too. Any news of the Empirical Compressor built for Tonelux racks?

Doesn't all of that really just get you going?

........ummm what exactly is 'ol Arnie doing in that picture, anyways?

(on the Tonelux front, I talked to Paul W and, though he couldn't say, I got the feeling the Distressor module wasn't exactly in the near future. I could be wrong. If the Distressor module is found to be as good as the 19" racker, the Tonelux system will be hard to beat. I could be wrong on that one, too--but I doubt it.)

Hi
Sorry, still not Tonelux review but ELP recorded aversion of 'Fanfare for the common man' as mentioned in the original post of this thread. Coincidence or design?
Lend me a Tonrelux system for a few days and I would happily review it but unfortunately I don't actually need one myself.

I e-mailed Paul W. about pricing on a specific Tonelux setup in October. He refered me to Gil, at Waves distribution, whom I then e-mailed that week. In January or February I had heard nothing from Gil, so, I-emailed him again. No reply. Then I PM'ed him through Gearslutz, thinking maybe my e-mail was getting spam blocked, but never received a PM back.

I was interested in a Tonelux setup, but have no idea how to get anyone to return e-mails about it. Maybe it was because I was interested in a smaller setup(8-channel summing with a couple of racks, so, there'd be room to grow). Maybe they're looking for bigger clients, but that kinda sux, because I thought expansion was the whole point....

The Real Deal

1. Work flow: Between the Tonelux rig and elaborate patch bay & setup done by Rob Pemberton my work flow improvement alone is worth the price of the whole of the Tonelux system. If anyone is interested I will elaborate.

2. Analog summing. I did some quick passes with some 14 track mixes. The result was pleasing to my ear and meets my expectation. I'll avoid the the whole science debate of ITB vs OTB debate and just say .. I LIKE IT. As I did my a/b tests I did run the stereo mix from ITB through the Tonelux in order to see if the analog step added what I liked as opposed to the analog summing. Well, I did like the color of the analog step on the ITB stereo mix but liked the Tonelux analog summing better.

3. Perspective-- Tonelux gear is not for the faint of heart due to its cost point. I can say without reservation I have no regrets or buyers remorse. On the other hand my budget was whatever I wanted it to be. I view the Tonelux System as the frame work to both integrate a bunch of analog outboard gear and interface with the digital relm. My own personal bias is that unless a person has or intends incorporate a bunch of premium outboard gear that the price is steep for just an analog summing bus.

In this day and age, I like to get things done. No time for BS'ing around. If emails ain't getting through, then you can believe I will pick up the phone and call someone, but that's just me. Besides there is too much room for misunderstandings with email IMHE.

It's here! Even though Walt Whitman has been dead for over 100 years, I located his review of the Tonelux console. Apparently, he gives it a big thumbsup

Quote:
THAT music always round me, unceasing, unbeginning—yet long untaught I did not hear;
But now the chorus I hear, and am elated;
A tenor, strong, ascending, with power and health, with glad notes of day-break I hear,
A soprano, at intervals, sailing buoyantly over the tops of immense waves,
A transparent bass, shuddering lusciously under and through the universe,
The triumphant tut ti—the funeral wailings, with sweet flutes and violins—all
these I
fill myself with;
I hear not the volumes of sound merely—I am moved by the exquisite meanings,
I listen to the different voices winding in and out, striving, contending with fiery
vehemence
to excel each other in emotion;
I do not think the performers know themselves—but now I think I begin to know them.

Is that Emerson the dead poet?
Nathaniel Hawthorne?

Never heard of the Palmer guy.

That's because he plays an obsolete instrument, popular among our European brethren in skirts. It's called the obtuse flute, or something like that. Long, skinny, metal apparatus with a grip on one end and a big bulb on the other. Sort of looks like a thin malformed English horn with a tumor. It's very popular with the outdoor crowd who wear spikey shoes and polo shirts. But the recordings have never really caught on. I hope he found something useful to do with that thing.

It was a prominent instrument in the 18-hole Overture.

And there was a solo in the soundtrack of the "Lord of the Holes" trilogy. But it was very soft and easily missed.

Not soft and not easily missed was the Beach Boys "I Get A Round".
