Hi all,
Ever since James Lugo ( Hemispheres Recording) recently packed up his SSL and moved to N.C., I've been looking for a friendly place where I can do some mix work. I have a bunch of projects lined up, three mixes need to be done very soon, and there's more to come in 2012.
So basically I'm looking for a mix room in the LA area with the following features:
- Well-tuned acoustics and a reliable monitoring situation
- Capable PT rig that's stable and up-to-date (at least PT 8)
- Selected high-end outboard and at least 16 I/Os for hybrid ITB mixes
- Some kind of PT controller in the range between Euphonix/Avid artist series to C24 or Icon.
- Friendly, no-bullshit attitude towards external producers/engineers.
No flaky and unprofessional people please!
Any suggestions would be awesome! I'm looking for a place to build a long term relationship with.
Thanks,
Julian

Thanks Joshua!
Resonate Studio B looks pretty much like exactly what I would need, if not almost too fancy. Not sure what their rates are, but I'll check it out.
Anything out there that's a little bit more low-key and more affordable?

Resonate is pretty reasonable about rates, and for a comparable mix studio I don't think you'll find one in the low end. Plus it's sexy and there's plenty of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. lol.

Yeah, I've just gotten off the phone with Terri and she was super nice. I might have to discuss the budget some more with the band I'm currently working with, but we'll see ;-)

I sent you a pm with information about our studio - AudioLot Studios and would be happy to discuss having you work here.

Josh (the other one),
Thanks for the PM. The live room looks very comfy!
The controller thing is pretty important to me, because I really like to have some faders under my fingertips, but I might also just get one for myself in the near future anyway. I'll be in touch.

Burt, shut up!
I could never watch you mix via skype. There's gonna be your mentally disturbed cats fighting themselves in the background :-D

Check out Total Access in Redondo Beach if you aren't married to working right in LA proper.
Cheers,

Julian | How's this for being accommodating? If you commit to booking some serious time in the room (more than a week) I'll pickup an Avid Artist Mix or Artist Control (your choice) so you'll have the motorized faders you're requesting.
It's very important to us that our clients feel comfortable working in our rooms.

Any other suggestions other than Resonate or Audiolot?
Total Access looks cool, but not what I'm looking for. No need for a large format console.
Come on folks, this is LA! There have to be more options for modern hybrid mix rooms. Otherwise I feel like there's a niche for that and will open my own place ;-)

So where did you end up mixing? Please tell us about it.
If you put it on hold or are still looking for the ultimate room with a great engineer, I would suggest Astound Studios in West LA. High-End Los Angeles Recording Studio - Astound Studios
Russ Berger designed room. Fairchild 670, Pultecs... a huge array of great outboard EQ and compressors. Plus, one of the best selections of monitors in one studio. Run by one of the hardest working engineers in LA, Greg Morgenstein. Great guy with great ears.
- Cheers

Shameless plug.
It's where The Wall was recorded and mixed. At least the overdubs were recorded there. And Steely Dan did the basic tracks to Aja there too. It's a cool old room. Was Westbeach in the 90's. Right in Hollywood.

John Rodd's studio? Scoring Mixer Music Recording Mixing Mastering John Rodd
He built it from the ground up and it looks and sounds great.
Great outboard gear as well, and the speakers are to die for (ATC).

Hey guys,
Sorry I've not been responding to this thread! Ellis at Studio Referrals suggested Marc Greene's room appropriately called The Greene Room and I've been quite happy with that. Good monitoring situation, nice collection of outboard, and a very focussed and straight-forward attitude.
I still miss working on an analog board, but I haven't come across an SSL mix room for less than $750/day in LA lately and that's just beyond the budget for my usual clients.
Thanks for all the great suggestions though. Always looking for something new and different ;-)
