blind mic test uploaded

these are uncompressed improv recordings of vocal and guitar. the mic is 5 inches in front of vocalist and the guitar is off mic. the mics are in the mid price range. would like to know which mic people prefer and why. i will give the answers in a bit. the files are labeled master-g and master-h. no reference to anything.

www.randomcubes.com/mic_check

these were recording through digi 002's not so great pres. no efx on tracks.

drat! they play fine here with quicktime on mac, but they need to be downloaded first. what if you change the extension to aiff (with 2 f's)?

Nope! Sorry - still not working. Any chance of making them .wav?

Man, gotta love relativity! I like G because of the LACK of air. With his voices natural timber, mic G really brings out the best qualities of the singer. Mic H doesn't sound bad, just less in your face(or maybe thats the way he sang the take) I have to say though-SUPER COOL SOUNDING VOCALIST! I love the raspy tone! The song itself doesn't hit me like the singers natural voice does though-but then again this is about the mics. Relative to the samples regardless of anything- Im lovin G!
Its funny, g gets worse when you play h BECAUSE you notice the drastic difference in the highs. Once you get over wanting a full spectrum sound, G has a magic H doesn't. Sadly its hard for me to tell the quality because I like the tonality of the singer so much-he'd sound great through a freakin camcorder mic! Im a firm believer in if the performance and musicians are good, the equipment is almost inconsequential(-of course not in regards to cinema or high def projects) Ill take a behringer pre and a phenomenal player over a 1073 and a decent one anyday. Listening to this just makes me wish I could sing......

very interesting. split so far. just to be clear this was not a "song" he just sat down and was noodling so it is improv. he may be mad that i even posted this. i will post the answer in a day or two. can you try loading the aiff in a different media player. it really should work.

It's hard really. aiff is a mac format and most PC appz are not fans of this format. Wheras, I think, .wav is more universal.

If I get a chance later I will try them out in Nuendo.

i have never heard of not being able to open an .aif on a pc. did you try to use the file import/open dialog or did you simply just double click it? if a lot of folks are having this problem, i will put up a .wav version. probably not until late tonight though. it really just sounds like a file association problem though.

Yep - tried that. I have never had any luck with aiff's on a PC.

I think whitepapagold nailed it.

At first I thought H was better because it was lees in your face...smoother. But on repeat listen, I liked the "up-frontness" of G better. I think it foces itself on the listened in a way that H didn't, you can't ignore it and it doesn't blend into the scenery like H does.

Another song...maybe a different result. More instrumentation...maybe another result.

Also, I had to open the files in Adobe Audition...wouldn't play in winamp or WMPlayer.

Well it's still tied at 8 a-piece as I write this...

I liked the intimacy and solid lower end of G.

h was clearer and with so little going on in the song you need it to be as clear as possible. g might work better in another song

aiffs play fine in win amp but next time stick with wav so save any problems.

and the winner is...
no winner. it was a damn tie. that sucks.

it was a battle from two sides of the old berlin wall:

g= microtech gefell um70s
h=your not so old friend mr. u87 ai.

this would have been more fun with a vintage 87 perhaps, but i didn't have one. the singer and i were quite partial to the gefell.
