Has Anyone tried the Korby Audio Kat Red or Blue Mics?

I am curious. I have done some searches and only found threads in the "New Gear" section regarding the new Korby Kat Red/Blue/Fet mics. Are they not out yet? They have them for sale on Vintage King and nothing about them not being available or backordered. So, if they are indeed out, are they cool? How do they sound?

We used them on a session a while back and were blown away! Fantastic on overheads and for the lead vocal too (used the convertible on that with the ELAM capsule). These mics are definitely the real deal...and a nicer bunch of people you will never deal with! Just had my 87 worked on there, and I will definitely be buying some mics when the budget allows.

JMTC...

Crypticglobe,

Did you use the KAT4 system on overheads and vocals. . .or the Kat RED/BLUE mics on

overheads and the KAT4 on vocals?

Thanks
Ryan

We used the KAT Blue during a workshop. Great mic, very even sounding (frequ) nice fat bottom and smooth high end, without sounding hyped. I would call it a great all around mic that works very well on many sources.

And yes, great, very helpful people at Korby thumbsup thumbsup

Hey Michael, how do you think it stacks up against your Soundelux 251? I am days away from ordering my E251C but.. well... I am always open to indecision....

LOL

Sorry.. and thanks for the prompted clarification. The Red/Blue were on OH, and the KAT4 with ELAM capsule on Vocal (a VERY powerful soulful female singer... like Christiana Aguilera with 10x more power).

two different animals. IMO the BLUE is a more versatile mic, usable on more sources. For vocals I would most like go for the 251.

Color me confused. I see the RED and the BLUE as being different mics on the VK site. Did you use RED for one OH and BLUE for the other? If so, which one was used on which side? Or do you have two pairs, a pair of REDs and a pair of BLUEs, both pairs being equally awesome in some way or another?

They are two different mics. If I remember correctly, we started with one... then went with the other. Can't remember which one we settled on... I would have to go back and look at my production notes. I remember liking both very much, but one of them was more suited to the kit.

Hope that helps.

I have the Kat blue. Previously I had the Soundelux E47, 251, and E49

To me the Kat blue is the best for voice and vocals. It has a lot of what sounds good in all 3 of those SD mics plus something more. AND it has a cool blue light!

I am trying to figure out what the best settings on the Vipre are for this mic. (Impedence and rise time) anyone know?

Kat Blue = best vocal mic ever and I have owned dozens of high end mics.

Anymore users with experience on the Blue? Does it have that 47/67 vibe?

Send a message via AIM to rhodesp04
john kennedy (JohnKenn) has gone on a holy grail search and after several choices (peluso, wunder, etc) ended up with a korby but i don't recall which red/blue.

i followed his search because he's a great singer.

I used the Blue on a rapper who really lacks air in his voice and it totally brought that out of him, making it much easier to pop out of the mix.

I haven't had the chance to use it on anyone or anything else, but I want to!

Another +1 for the Korby Blue.

It sounds incredible on instruments (violin, bass, sax, trumpet) as well as vocals, drums and pretty much anything you throw at it!

I still love my Korby Kat Blue!

I have owned so many high-end mics (SD, AKG, RCA, ETC!)( note: I only do my own voiceover and vocals, but occasionally record random other people) and I finally stopped over 12 years of mic shopping... It's DONE. Kat Blue = best. It sounds great through the Pacifica and then into the LA2a or through the ViPre and LA2A... I have never had better.

If you are recording vocals and can only get 1 mic.. get this one. It always sounds great.

The KAT Red is an awesome mic. I'm currently selling mine becasue I need the money and don't have any big project lined up to justify keeping but it's a very full bodied mic that makes almist every source sound great. Especially Vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and strings.

By request, just posted an audio sample of male vocals recorded with this Korby on my last project. Tracked and compressed via a UA LA-610, with no EQ in the mix and just a simple hall reverb. Pretty bare so you can hear what it sounds like.

korby

well, korby blue mic is my radar (after many changes in my top 3 list from wunder to beesneez to ADK custom shop to blabla... well you know what I mean)
do you know any European distributor? I've sent several mails to different places (including Korby) 3 days ago and still no answer (it's terrific how some online shop are not willing to sell products, in my experience 1 on 3 answers customers prospect question in Europe...)tutt

I wanted to find an European dealer first but it seems Korby is not well known around here... Sonic circus provided a feedback to my answer in less than 2 hours, I will compare of course the offer with vintage king as well.
thanks!

Yeah, Vintage King is where I bought mine. Good guys. I'm selling my RED because I have enough to get by for my very minimal future needs but it's absolutely fantastic - let me know if you're interested.

thanks a lot,

yes I saw the Red version in the classified and I was more in the Blue direction according to what I've read, it's more what I'm looking for (the red is more transparent with extended top as far as I understood, a kind of C12 capsule style), wondering if someone compares red from blue...?
the blue is more in the U47/U67 direction I guess ... as I have a brauner vm-1 I want another color with more mid range

hopefully we are still in the OP subject!

I just started working at a studio that has a KAT RED. It sounds FANTASTIC. Very smooth response and very natural sounding. Killer on vocals and acoustic instruments.
