My RND Master Buss Processor Audio Diary

OK guys, I have seen a lot of threads and started my own on this amazing piece. But I decided to create a dedicated thread as an audio diary just to make things easier for guys who want to hear it. Hopefully it will save a lot of time searching through threads for audio samples.

Also, I am looking for opportunities to play with it and, for the first five guys who ask, I will process a stereo mix of their choice free of charge as long as we get to post it here for research and discussion.

To start it off I will post a drum track slowly evolving from no processing to everything on the unit. I hope this helps everyone see very subtle to dramatic processing capabilities.

Cheers!

Ok, I processed Sheeps Head Marginalia. I added a few db to the overall RMS, widened up the side and added a touch of depth in the middle. I also used the silk + curcuit because I thought a few of the sections with the horns got a touch harsh in high mid's. I think the silk + smoothed it out a bit. Also, I wanted to increase the RMS to show the transparency of the limiting.

Just had a listen............
I really like it actually.....
Smoother yeah, seems more detail to be heard from the subtle tweakage. Horns do seem less harsh yeah, the bass (which was a bowed electric bass recorded in open tune onto vari speeded up tape then slowed down to normal speed) has more definition. Background details have more interest and clarity it seems. I only listened once, will have another listen later on too, but initial impressions indicate that you have a really juicy useful high quality box there.
Bravo........

Ok, so here is another song that I played with. This time I thought the original mix lacked some clarity so I used the regular silk mode along with a similar compression and limiting as the first track. I wound up with a nice clear sound, the guitars really seemed to pop out more and the voices sound more crisp yet deep. The link has all 4 files now, both songs processed and original. Any comments are welcomed and I am still accepting stereo files to run through the Neve MBP for research and discussion. Cheers!!!

Yes................Really nice Jim, I've only listened to it on my hi-fi at home, not on the monitors in the studio..............but intial impressions are very favourable. You're right, the clarity seems to really shine without any harshness...............Sheeit, i'm gonna have to get me one of these boxes, either that or get you to master all the new stuff, e! Thanks for running the tunes thru the Neve man, it's been very enlightening and a lot of fun to hear em! Full marks and Full Power to you sir!!!
All the best.........

DREZZ

Drezz, those songs are fantastic. I imagine a parallel universe where syd barret and robert smith are both in their early 20's and happy. I like both the MBP processed and the original files....

I imagine the MBP used in conjunction with some other gear would be perfect for the tunes, but I appreciate how the files were treated with just that box...so as to hear what it can do, which seems like it can do darn near anything.

Really enjoying this thread. Wish there was a function to recommend or rate a thread as a MODEL THREAD, this one is nice.

Thanks very much for the kind words. I recorded the Cloudshoes material at my studio (The Tape Rooms, Bristol,UK). the songwriter is a man called Conrad Singh, we work on the arrangements together, its an ongoing project, we are currently working on the album. I'd love to come to the states and work on a few tunes in studios there. Its all recorded on analogue gear.
Thanks for taking the time Jim. I will get in touch i think when the album comes together and if you want to, maybe you can master some stuff? (for a fee of course)
The RND is a worthy processor indeed. Congratulations.....
Looking forward to hearing more clips from other folks.......
Cheers...

Hello Luke,

Below are the original clip and the MBP clip. As you stated, the lead voice was a little front forward, usually that's a good thing, but in this case it needed something. I notice that the LF was pretty thin so I added depth in that frequency range and used the silk + mode on the mid channel just to give it some added warmth and depth. This was a situation where the vocals didn't need to be brought down but the surrounding material needed to occupy it's given space more fully. Additionally, I added silk + and some width in the HF for the side information for the first few minutes. At 2:28 I opened up the side to the entire frequency range because the guitar solo was a little too front forward as well. I think these treatments along with some overall RMS boosting made the mix more balanced, full, cohesive, and record ready.

I really liked the song, awesome RnB feel and it was fun to process because I think this song needed and showed the most dramatic improvement to date (as far as what I have done with tracks).

Thanks again and please share your thoughts

Not my paticular cup of tea, but i appreciate the work involved and production wise: pretty crisp and full. RND processing by Jim takes it to the next level:Phat!!!

Sounds great Jim ! I love what you did to the low end... sounds more... "ballsy" would be a good description ! The silk wamed things up, even kinda tamed the high hat a little ... Did you add low end eq too, or was all this done through processing with the RND ? If you used EQ, what was it ? Also, can you tell me the ADDA converters used ? Thanks for taking time to do this ! I'm sure my buddy will LOVE what you did for his song !
I mixed this Klypsch PC speakers, and Sonar X1... it is really hard to get a handle on bass frequencies , especially since I mixed it on my sons computer in his bedroom ! ( I love a challenge ! ) .... I plan on remixing it , by sending stems out through my console.... and then.... sending that to you ..again !! hahahaha I love the analog touch ! I've got that RND piece in my sights ... maybe Santa will be generous this year !

Thanks Luke!! I used my Avid HD I/O and the RND MBP completely alone, no other processing it has an EQ section on the SFE and I used that to help sweeten things up

If you do a stem mixI would love to process again since I could summ the stems through my Dangerous 2 buss. It would be nice to see what difference that makes from the original mix and the first run through The RND MBP

Thanks for the offer ! I have an Allen and Heath GS3000 that has pretty descent eq's and mix buss.. I'll see what I can do with that, and send ya the stems .. It will only be 4 stereo stems, and 2 mono channels, I'm afraid, since I've only got 8 DA's on my interface, plus two more from my Apogee mini dac..
Is the Dangerous 2 bus the one which is passive, and you get different flavors depending on the mic pre you pass the output to ?

Sounds good to the first comment

Second question, no, the 2buss is not really a coloration unit, it just kind of opens things up, very transparent but noticeable. I think using it will show what it can do with stems
