I've been reluctant to bring my gear down here from the US for two reasons. Security is the first, but the second is the pinche electricity ( o sea, frequencia de apagazos, the frequency of outages ) . I'm scared a voltage spike is going to fry my goodies!!! What do people in countries w/ crappy electric companies do to protect their gear? Please don't say "Furman conditioner!"

if you don't have alot of gear, a coupla no breaks. if you have alot of gear, a large no break or two (topaz for example). unreliable current is a given here (can go from 90v to 160v in a flash), so it's good you're taking that into consideration. power conditioners are useless for this and regulators are too slow. brown outs are not uncommon during rainy season. those are lethal. smoke coming out of a pultec or vibroluxe blackface ain't a pretty sight. it happened to me at first.

with good no breaks you're golden.

I use a Sola 5000 watts regulator/power conditioner, I really do not remember model and or specifications. Never had a a problem since installation on 1996 ( installed after ADAT fried on power outage ) with my hardware from digital reverbs like lexicon, tc and even tube equipment like avlaon, manley Drawmer and many others.. I use two no breaks for computers, DAW, digital mixer and some other things. I owned a Euphonix CS 2000 (previously owned by raal ) some years ago and never had a problem with electricity or power failures.
As I remember delcosmos has some voltage problems on CS2000 but I really do not remember If he is using power conditioner or no break. maybe he can tell us more on this..

any links to that power supply ? I'm curious
I use a furman line regulator (not the useless power conditioners) and so far so good, it's very fast, never had any problems and I've had some surges from hell, according to the specs it can take a lighting strike and still protect your gear

Thanks for your input, everybody. I think I'm going to go with a UST regulator and a big mamma-jamma UPS. One last thing : can anybody recommend some good clubs for interesting rock here in the DF? I've only been told of the Bulldog. Thanks again. Cheers --Dan

if you get the big UPS, i don't think the regulator will be necessary.

What are you talking about? I plug my Neve 8038 DIRECTLY into the CFE lines EVERYDAY and I can't recall having any problem by doing so, even with storms ...

Well, I don't know about you, but I have never been concerned with clean power in my dreams.

I just got back home from living a year and a half in DF and before comming back I worked at a bar called "Factory" as a FOH engineer. It has a great rock scene, a lot "independent label" kind of bands play there. It´s located about a block from Metro Insrugentes at Jalapa street between Puebla and Durango ( I don´t recall the adress number but there´s a small "Factory" sign outside jeje). I also saw a lot of famous musicians that came by to check it out as it´s gainning a lot of popularity (like the guys from Cafe Tacuba, Abulon from Victimas del Dr. Cerebro, etc.)

You should go and check the scheduled bands for the month, not a "Bulldog" kind of bar, it´s smaller but if your into rock and the underground scene you´ll like it.

Where are you from Balaperdida? I got the impression that you just arrived to DF.

See ya and ARRIBA MEXICO CABRONES!!!!

Speaking about the underground scene, most of the mexican gearslutz I've met here are involved in high-class acts. Is anyone doing mainly underground stuff?

Sounds like a great venue, Oroz -- I'll definitely check it out!

As far as where I'm from, I grew up in Mexico City ( afuerita, por Cuajimalpa ), but we moved to the US when I was fifteen so... me hize requete pocho . Now, at 30, by pure chance, I got a job that took me back to the DF ( not audio related, alas ) helping out la SEP. Still living out of suitcases, but hopefully in a month or so I'll be able to put down some money for a permanent place and start plugging my gear in. I have to say it's good to be back, though! I'd forgotten hom much I love this desmadre of a city ( pero que pedo con Ciudad Sta Fe? De donde vino esa madre? Tumbaron la casa donde me crie, y constuyeron, no casa, pero pinche CIUDAD sobre ella!?!? )

That´s me jejeje, I live in a small town here in Sonora and you can say that everything is underground, people struggle just to get the sufficient money to record an entire album but we have dreams and we love music so sooner or later we´ll be on another track.

Excellent!!!

That makes me wonder ... is radio play and fame and money an ideal to follow for these bands you deal with? In my city, it mostly is. The underground scene is driven by fashion (emo, anyone?) and the dream of everybody is to "make it big". I might be old, but I think these are not good ideals to look up to.

It never results in good music.

The same old cliches.

Hi Paisanos, I use a Tripplite power conditioner model, SMART ONLINE 2.2 kva
this unit is the power of my system, all my gear is connected here, and I have 4 hours of battery backup!!!
I have several mastering & recording gear to really protect and take care, cause the mexican company really SUCKS, I took a seminar with this guys at tripplite and they said that the quality of the electricity in mexico is the same that you drink a glass of wather in the poorest neighborhood full of polution, son cosas del subdesarrollo
