The Mohog uses an edcor transformer on the input, and on output has both an edcor and a carnhill output transformer- with a switch to choose between output trafos. I have 2 and love them- and track vocals, snare/kick, piano, etc etc through them.

The Purple MC77 has an ed anderson (altran) input transformer- I believe the Altran C 3837-1 Rev A/D Input Transformer. I have a MC77 and it has a more hi fi sorta sound TME - I tend to use it on bass -cause I find that bass needs to be thinned in mix and needs the mids to be articulated in a hi fi sorta way.

I am currently having built my 4th "1176" and will be going the Altran C 3837-1 Rev A/D Input Transformer with Carnhill/edcor output trafos.

Thanks for the heads up of Altrans being used in Burl and Wunders- did not know that.

haha apparently i do not know how to properly quote people.

Thanks for the input Asaagai. The 1176 you are building is basically what I would like to try. Are you going to use the mnats circuit?

I'm shopping for an 1176. The Mohog offering is looking very good to me but I'm interested in the OPs question about ReviveMusic's clone. Does anyone have experience with his stuff? Does it stand up to the Mohog or even the UA reissue?

Revive's clone offers some pretty serious muscle and to my experience is a legit contender for 1176 applications.

They have an excellent price point, use excellent parts and the sound is on par with the components employed in the design.

I have a pair of Rev Fs with Ed Anderson designed transformers.

I have yet to hear an 1176 that uses the EA transformers disappoint.

They definitely have much more authority in them, its totally part of their imprint as well as what I'm familiar with when it comes to vintage 1176s.

Peace
Illumination

OK, I went with the Revive 1176 as it's several hundred dollars less than the Mohog though without the selectable x-former option and nice wood faceplate. Should be arriving at my house today. For my first 1176, the lower price point seemed like the logical way to go considering his Ebay feedback and the components used in the unit. Thanks for helping me make a decision.

Ed's transformers do exactly what they are supposed to do in the circuit. Rev A's and D's are made to do a certain thing, and his transformers are an important part of what people like about this circuit. I have made many of these, Rev A's, Rev D's, REv F's, and Rev G's. I have used Jensen, Cinemag, and the Ed OT's. The later versions have a different input circuit, but even more important is the output section, with the Rev A and D both having more distortion, which seems to be what people like about them. My fave OT for these is Ed's, and to me it fits the circuit perfectly

I absolutely love it. It's my first hardware 1176 so I can't compare it to any other real box but I can tell you I like it a lot more than any plug-in compressor that I've ever used.

It has a dead spot on the output trimmer that is covered by warranty but I haven't been willing to send it back for repair 'cause I've been using it so much. The dead spot is high up (at 6 on the dial) so it's not really in a spot that I ever touch anyway.

It did something for a very aggressive female vocal that none of my UAD or digi compressors could do, for what that's worth.

I see the price has gone up a tad since I bought mine.
