High-end compressor recommend needed!

For outboard compressors, I have (not for 2-buss, using a SSL G384 for that):

1. Emperical Labs Fatso.
2. Alan Smart C2
3. Avalon 747sp (thinking about upgrading withthe babyface mode and putting Telefunken tubes in it... or should I sell it?)
4. Manley Vox box
5. LA-2A (vintage)

So, what those, what pair of compressors would compliment that set?

Oh, pres, I have pairs of VintechX73s, B.A.E 312s, Manley Vox.

Would you recommend a pre.compressor combo instead?

Thanks guys.

I've heard good things about the Shadow Hills mastering comp, but haven't heard one in person yet.

I have a Summit TLA 100..I have had it for like 10 years now..it's cool.very smooth sounding good for smoothing out vocals without imparting to much of a sound. It's ok on snare too and bass as well.

Oh, I also have an LA-2A

Oh, I DO also have a vintage LA-2A...so that's covered. Thanks for the reminder Thrill.

As for the Purples, that was my thinking.

You guys think a pair of 1176 (ish) compressors is the next best all around choice? How about for drums, etc?

If you want hi-end then you can't go wrong with a NTP 179-170. Super-smooth and a total no-brainer for tracking vocals.

I paid a staggering $ 100 for mine that came from Swiss National Radio that decided to 'upgrade' their gear....

A pair of Purples or a pair of Dakings will do you just fine.

Guys, but speaking about LA-2A or 1176 what are you referring to?
The original units or various reissues (UA etc.)?
And if you are referiing to the originals, how good can be 40 (or more) years old electronic components?

Now you've done it, especially on THIS board!

All you have to do is look at 99% of the gear made today and then look at 99% of the gear talked about, wanted, sought and bought today and you have your answer...

Why are we all talking about the finer points of a Neve 1073 module (not to mention even the best of the best clones or today's "Neve") still not being as good as some of the older ones) or why is there so much debate and hassle over the Toft ATB that struggles to reclaim the glory of an old Trident 80B.

My guess, most of today's gear is GC, low-end user focused. You do have a few high-end designers and makers today, but we're talking small operations. The big Mackies of the world are not creating product that is going to be debated like an old Neve 1073 module or orignal 1176...

And the final answer to your question should be asked to UA. Why are they trying so hard to capture a sound their father made so long ago...and still can't seem to get right?

Tube-Tech SMC-2B. That thing sounds awesome. Plus it's different than any of the compressors that you already have. The Thermionic Culture Phoenix would also be a good choice, as would a Pendulum ES-8. But it also despends on you budget and what you want to use it for. Also, +1 for the Purple.

Dump the Vox Box? Really. What do ypu think of the EQ section though? I sort of think it is like the Pultec but unique and good for vocals, even if I'm not using the pre or compressor part. But if you have a seperate recommendation for that, I'm interested.

Curious what you think of the EQ on the Manley vox box... or otherwise?

I had a pair years ago and got rid of them.

I thought the EQ was useful on somethings and useless on others.

The best feature i felt was the D.I. which has a great sound.

What would be very good, pure a simple EQ for tracking vocals that you'd recommend then? Or no EQ when tracking? If no on tracking then SSL E series EQ on mixing? (If I'm remembering correctly, you work on a E series...of sorts)

la3a

It's nice to have a fast comp and a slow comp for tracking.

the distressor will do both, but I like:

Slow:

original LA2a
Original La3a with the 1 resistor mod and 600 Ohm buid out
TLA 100 summit, I've worked with good ones and shitty ones, tube issues I guess

Fast:
Purple 1176
Daking fet
Blackface original 1176

I hear great things about the pendulum stuff.

These days i rarely track vocals with EQ.

The rare times i do its a Pultec or the EQ section of a Neve 1073/1084 to add a little "air" to a boring singer/microphone.

it seems i'm always recommending old stuff but i think your set-up might benefit from a pair of original DBX 160VU's. there's not a day goes by that i don't use those suckers on something and they always sound great. i believe george martin once called them "indespensible."

my two cents...

p.s.- i'm only in my 30's, btw! i'm not an old-timer, just love old-time gear...
