Studer A800 and Dolby NR

Hi guys,
So someone mentioned to me recently I might want to get a dolby card to have around and to use on certain things since I record a lot at 15IPS. Just wondering what I should get. I know there are a few different cards. I don't mind the hiss and I'm usually recording louder music but I have a record coming up that is going to be mostly acoustic and fairly delicate. I know some folks will say use 30 but I really don't want to. I like the low end of 15. To me 30 just doesn't sound tape enough for me

I'm also curious about different ways of alignment too before I grab a dolby. I know some folks jack up the record input as well as the record treble but then back off the playback treble to simulate a homemade NR. I believe that is correct? Right now my machine is aligned to +6. I've read that +10 isn't a bad idea for a quieter recording.

I really want to take advantage of such a great machine. I know it fairly well but want to try these things. Please give me info!

Cheers!

Dolby SR, and the machine should be lined up to 320nwb +2 at 15 ips, and don't forget to line the dolby as well!

I used to use BASF 900 at 15ips, 0/250nw with Dolby SR. It worked well. There was NO NOISE. I also used Dolby A-type a few times as well. It worked ok with loud rock. I did more with SR though. When it was all properly set up, it sounded really good. And the 900, set at that level, gave one enormous headroom and dynamic range. I also would use 14" reels whenever I could. You could get over an hour of recording time per reel! I did the most work with SR on A-800's. Look for a full rack of SR. They've become very inexpensive these days.
