Ultimate signal path for rock?

Or as close as I can get.

I need your help. I can only afford one thing this year. The Voxbox broke again (for the third time) and I am done with it.

I do mostly rock. I am looking for a unit to cover the kick or snare during tracking and then use it for guitars, vox, etc. I need it to pile up nicely with other tracks from itself, and be flexible to have dimension.

So what I am looking at (roughly $2400 budget)...

Also I want an EQ (or maybe compressor), not just a preamp

Wunder PEQ1

Germanium + Purple Audio 1176

Start a lunch box with a Purple Audio Preamp + API EQ

Chandler MKII

Chandler Ltd 1

So what should I get? Honestly, this will decide my choice. I figure I cannot go wrong with any of those.

Thanks to all!

If you're into Chandler gear, I'd consider the Ltd 2 over the 1176.

I think what i am going to do is get a Daking Mic Pre/EQ and a Germanium. Two choices for pre, a good eq for about $2500.

Doe the Daking EQ mind getting the pre signal from another?

Any other suggestions from anyone??

Thanks!

I have 2 api 312's that Brent racked for me. I also have two Neve 1272's.

I want that unique mono signal path that has a certain flavor.

Thanks man!!!!

Well, what are you using the 312's and the 1272's on?

yea, I know.

I wanted a different flavor with an EQ, and then use that EQ with the 312's and 1272's as well. Right now I have no outboard eq! It sucks. It is time for a new sound.

It would also give me a choice for vocals and guitars, not just the "same 'ol" signal path.

Thanks bat !

As you know, everything has a "certain flavour", but if you're after something different than what you got, how about getting a lunchbox? That's the route I've gone, putting more flavours in a tiny footprint. I've started with an A-Designs P-1, "inspired" by quad eight. If you check out the A-Designs 500 rack preamps they are really a family that closely related but different.

Each pre has a slighlty different character whilst retaining the same quality. The idea is that this gives you tracks that sit in a mix, but separate enough to find their own space.

My next step will probably be a 550b or some other EQ that's a local home brew for the rack. I just rented a 550b and I have to say it was SUPER handy to have an outboard EQ like that. You already mentioned the Purple, and I think I'll get one of those too...

After umming and arring about pre's for six months I went with the 500 rack. It made financial sense too. Check out the prices of pre's that you can buy racked or for the 500 rack (like the ones you already have). There's a whole bunch of options out there already and field is opening up.

John Hardy and Buzz are about to release Pre's and the Speck is apparently on the way Chandler is supposedly thinking about it too, with would be really cool as far as colours go.

Just my $0.02c

Or you could just get the Germ, but rent one first to see if it's right (obviously!)

Good luck!

I'd pick up some API 560's to use on the kick and snare.
