John Golden Mastering...

I just had a reference for John Golden. Has anyone had a project mastered there. Any comments on their work. Thank you.

I haven't, but their website looks good. It appears that they've mastered a lot of indie rock. The equipment and facility looks pretty nice from the pictures.

Sorry I can't offer any first hand experience. If you got a recommendation to go with them, it's probably worth a shot.

BTW, I lived on Kauai for 5 years. I hear they've had a bit of rain lately. Bad flooding. I was there for Hurricane Iniki. It was crazy.

Is it raining there now?

I had a record done by JJ Golden, John's son. It sounds great and JJ is a great guy. He was quite attentive and comunicated wonderfully even on a long distance project. He and I got to hang out at TapeOpCon last year and he's a really great guy. A good friend used JJ recently and that record sounds great too.

John and JJ have done about 25 projects for me. Wonderful work. I have never asked them to change a thing. Great people, great prices, great work.

West coast-John Golden

East Coast-Joe Lambert

Thanks for the info guys... Yeah JDUN, 40 days of rain, the whole state got it bad, but Kauai had that dam break that took a few lives... The weather seems to be going back to normal. Aloha

when my first band's first record came out in '95, we did it on a mackie and some ADAT's but thankfully the record co. got john golden to do the mastering and he made it sound better than it had ANY right to!

in other words, book him now!

Reviving an old thread here..

Would anyone wanna do me a big favor and post before/after clips of projects mastered by John Golden? I _LOVE_ the stuff I've heard him do, but they all have been recorded & mixed by my fave engineer Steve Albini, so the mixes are pretty excellent to begin with. I'd love to hear some before/afters to hear John's actual contribution.

I'm looking for a place to get my own record mastered, and since the sound and vibe is pretty Steve Albini-ish, I think John Golden might be the guy for the job.
The latest Weedeater album sounds so good it's not even funny and John mastered it. Albini really hit the spot on that one too.

1-minute high bitrate mp3's would do nicely. I'd really appreciate it.

thimbs up for golden.
he has done about half a dozen projects for me. We even drove down to his place a couple years back to hang out for the mastering. Nice guy, good people.
about half of the records I grew up on were hanging on his wall including BOTH Men at Work albums!!
you can't really go wrong.

Why not ask John for some? He'll probably have a wide variety of clips to illustrate what he's contributed.

Yeah, about 2 secs after posting I kinda thought of that myself. I blame lack of sleep and temporary case of the brain farts.

Whenever I got into trouble with the cops as a kid, I always told them my name was John Golden. Sorry John!

hi folks, are you referring to the same John Golden who mastered Ron Carter's Peg Leg (1977)? I just scored an original pressing and it sounds mighty marvelous, the bottom is just right - very dynamic and warm sounding recording.

A bunch of records I've done have been mastered by JJ and John. I've always been very happy with the results, but, more importantly, the band is always happy. Also, I think they are an incredible bargain in the world of mastering.

I've only done one record there...an Albiniesque indie thing. Everyone was thrilled and the price more than fair.
