Man - nothing sounds like a Sta-Level

OK - except maybe the real Gates Sta - but I can imagine finding a one in good shape would be a nightmare. Anyway - just picked one up from a fellow slut and have been singing through it a little while today. It just fattens everything. Adds a thickness and roundness. The GE 6386 tube came with the sale, but after using it, it might be a little too much dirt for my taste on vocals. I bet it sounds fantastic on bass though.
Sounds like the Sta is adding some 10-15Khz too...

Ya, you noticed that huh?

STA level is one of the best compressors ever for fat monster vocals. Not to mention it is stupid silly easy in getting a good sound - minimum tweaking needed. I love that. Simple - it just works.

Big fan of your stuff John. (I'm putting you in for a grammy nom - just joined.) Personally, I think the STA level is THE COMPRESSOR for the John Kennedy sound. (I've followed you since the start here and I suppose you have been through most every pre, vocal chain out there).

Post a sample please. I'd love to see if I am right.

Are you tracking through it or using it at mix? I've never even considered using them on guitars.. but now I'm going to try.

Love it on bass, generally when tracking.

Tracking
It's at the end of a sub on the console
Multiple amps(fender,vox,supro,silvertone,etc) mic'd (and a DI)through various neve/API mic pres .
Mix and match different amps & mics(room & close- fet47,57,Gefell um70,Coles,etc) for a particular track
That mess(all on faders) triple checking phase, usually v little little ch EQ( eq changing mic combos)
All gets bussed down to the single sta & pultec eq.
Ride faders into the comp.. Either meters barely moving for heavy stuff or more if needed.pultec for final sweetener .. Maybe a slight little 3-5 k boost
It may sound like overkill but its a super fast way to track gtrs and have lots of tone options.
It's a pretty colorful tracking chain but for this particular project it's working great
Gtrs big n' warm
No console?use a Fat Bustard etc

Do you still suggest the Brute? Will you try the new JLM audio opto unit?

It does seem to add a nice sheen on the top end, one of the reason I choose to get one.

Planning to get a good 6386 myself, sounds like a nice variation to have.

btw, I LOVE the Sta on drum room on the slower tracks. ANyone else use it there?
