It's basically the same fan they used in the 192 I/O:
COFAN F-8025M12BII, 12V DC, 33cfm and 29dB(a) noise.

It's easy to replace it with a quieter fan and that makes a big difference.

yep, the fans aren't that bad, but I'm about to swap them out in my new HD i/o's - go the extra mile and all that...

I found the following over at the avid forums:

"I just got the new HD i/o as well and the fan isn't bad but I want it more quiet as well. I opened it up and found the specs on the fan and how easy it would be to switch out. The fan it comes with is part# F-8025M12B II @ Axial Fans / 80x80x25 mm II and is rated at 29.9 dB at max speed not to mention it seems to rattle a bit! I found a fan SilenX Corporation - Effizio Quiet Fans
that has about the same flow rated at 15dB max speed which is WAY more quiet. They sell on newegg @ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835226034
I think all that needs to be done is carefully take the connector off or splice in with the new fan since the one in the HD i/o has a 4 pin connector."

Heres a link to that thread: Need a new quieter fan to HD IO.. - Avid Audio Forums

I think this one might be the best option?

SilenX Corporation - Effizio Quiet Fans

If anyone has changed their fan please let us know how it went.

That one (EFX-08-12) is not pushing nearly enough air, so it's not a suitable replacement and the converter will run way hotter than it's designed to.

The one you linked to earlier (EFX-08-15) is a considerably better candidate at 32 cfm, and is still nearly 15dB quieter (assuming the measurement methods are comparable...) than the stock fan in the HD I/O.

My buddy next had me replace the fans in 3 blue digidesign interfaces. Made a considerable difference. I just cut the 2 wires and soldered plus shrink-rubbered the new ones in. Pretty easy, but you need to make sure the fans rotade the right way. If you mess up the polarity it runs backwards.

I replied in the avid forum as well but the EFX-08-15 fan is still running great in my hd i/o 8x8x8 since last year. Very happy and easy to change out. And yes you want to make sure to get the EFX-08-15 since it has a CFM rating equivalent to the stock fan but is far more quiet and I can record acoustic guitars in the same room with it now. Maybe my stock fan was worse then some since it had a rattle as well. Note that you do have to switch or splice the connector on the new fan with the stock fans connector. I've attached a photo of the stock fan. It's in the bottom right and the connector is the white one at the top right.

I dont have these interfaces..... are the fans supposed to pull air in, or out?

just did the hd io fan mod with a silenex fan as spoken about above. awesome. night and day. amazing. worth it if needed. not a plug and play mod. need to splice some wires but not hard. be blessed.

I just changed the fan inside an omni interface... but it seams like there is a rpm- oder current measurement because i get a fan error message after a minute.

edit: I did some testing, its not about current measurement (tried an parallel resistor to higher the current) but the tacho signal. I reconnected the orignal fan, stopped it, and after a minute I also got the fan failure.
