Thread Starter | decision time
Recently I posted up about some advice on a good comp for electronic dance music, more leant towards drum buss work and lower range elements of the mix. It's coming closer to decision time now and I thought I would post up what are the contenders in my list, which I am trying to pick through and eventually choose what will be my go to comp for bass/drums. UBK Fatso Empirical Labs Distressor EL8XS Stereo Pair API 2500 what to buy!

Not to further confuse you with more options, but I produce EDM and I always use my Alternate Soundings Dynax2 on my drum bus. Definitely worth looking into, it is absolutely amazing on low frequency content. Best of luck!

Thread Starter | Hi there, I have looked into it. Never heard it though, but I have heard OF it. And yes I've heard it sounds amazing... however, the price is seriously steep, which is probably the only reason I'd stay away. I can get all of the above options much cheaper. If it was more competitively priced I'd be very, very much considering it.

There is two different models, the newer model is exactly the same except it offers one additional compression curve (4:1). I only intended to use mine for drum bus/bass compression so I didn't mind dropping the light compression ratio. I was able to pick up the older model at a greatly reduced cost (around the price of the API 2500 and UBK Fatso). I emailed Craig over at calistromusic.com and he helped me out a lot. If you're in the same boat as me, definitely look into one of the older models. Hell, maybe even Craig has another one. To stay on topic, if you're really set on one of the three you've listed.. it's tough to say, I like the Fatso and the API 2500. The API is a bit more transparent in comparison, but they're both pretty colorful. |

Couldn't you argue that the FATSO is more limited in controls compared to the other two on your list. And for electric dance music, wouldn't you want more control?
