NTP 179 Series Compressors.

Does any one have any hands on experiences with these compressors?
If so, any thoughts you can share?

Yes, I was lucky enough to get a NTP 179-170 unit real cheap thru a radio station gear sale. This basically happened when I took up Pro Tools and recording in general 2 years ago...there might be folks here with more experience.....I love it! It basically stays in line whenever I record, it's extremely transparent. Although you sure can crush stuff with the 179 I think it works best as a 'safety net' while recording and to give a subtle polish to stuff. I use the 1176 and sometimes the dbx160XT as 'attitude' comps......
And, believe it or not, I just bought a second 179-170 thru the same radio station for a staggering 150 swiss francs (roughly $ 100 ! )
I'd really like to here some pro opinions on these babies too.

ive only used used it a couple of times and it was very good. not much info there but what i do know is that it was the main compressor that guys like bob ludwig & howie weinberg used all the time at masterdisk mastering in the 80's. that says alot for how good it is as a mastering compressor.

Yeah. That's what I've heard too. I was just wondering if any members here had experience with them.
I'm looking at a pair of 179-140's or 150's.

Yeah, but those guys also mastered on big Ureis too back in the day.

Sometimes you are forced to use what you got out of necessity and not necessarily by choice.

I use the 179-170, and I really love them. They are really hard to "hear"...they are not in the "colourfull" range of compressors, and not a "efx-compressor" to my ears. A very "mild" compression...without anyone to get any funny ideas, and misunderstand me...I would call them my "poor man GML´s" clearly knowing, that nothing comes close to a GML compressor..

Kind regards

Peter
