Different LDCs on stereo overheads

Hey does anyone else use different mics on diffent sides of a stereo setup eg a U87 as the left overhead near the ride and floortom and a TLM193 on the right over the rack Tom, snare and hihat.

Tell me what combinations you like and/or problems you have had mixing up microphones in a stereo overhead setup.

Sure... why not.

My usual choice for a dissimilar pair is a U-47 on the "ride side" and a C-12 on the "hat side" for a kit... but that's probably just me. FWIW I think the thought process I have is probably a bit similar to yours... "clearer" microphone on the hat side... "thicker" mic on the ride side.

Hope it works out for you.

Peace

We usually put a 4038 (not an LDC, I know) on the tom side and a U67 more towards the snare.

Sure. why not? A U87 (ride side) and U87ai (hats side) makes a great combination too... but there's another possibility:

If you have a bunch of SDCs, try them as spot mics on all cymbals and then just place them accordingly in the stereo field for playback. A bunch of 451s, 460s, 84s etc on different cymbals according to what sounds best.

CHeers,

Ward

I'll try it out but I tend to try and get my drum sound with as few mics as possible, usually 2-5 mics depending on how hard the drummer hits the snare and toms relative to the cymbals.

I use the TLM193 over the snare and hats to minimize hi hats and crash so I can have the snare and rack tom nice and loud without close miking.
