whats the deal with OSA 11 space rack?

im on the market for 500 series rack on the cheap
i see OSA 11 space racks appear from time to time however note that ti's discontinued

is there any problem with the units?
i think i heard somewhere that there's power problems
also see in avedis's website that the ma5 CANNOT be used with them
any other modules that should not be used with the OSA 11 space rack?

many thanks!

i have one that has not offered any major issues here.
seems i recall there was a number of different power supplies and a few that may have been problematic.
i have seen and have a coupe through and the all seem to be some what out of square, it can be difficult to near impossible to get some units in the far left side, but not a major issue.
a number of tech's have told me they will not work on them so?

personally i would try to find a API, a Purple Audio or BAE.
from what i have seen used it would not be much more and far better quality.

if the price was right, i would not pass on one.

+1!!
If I were you I'd go for a BAE (since you're looking for an 11 space), or a Purple sweet ten.. Well built and solid (and no pin1 problem )!
We have a Purple rack that I'm using live.. Very happy with it!

I would have gone for the BAE since it offers one more space, but lugging around an external pwr supply is a pita.. For the studio I'd choose the BAE, even if I have to say that both units are excellent!

A lot of people seems to underestimate the importance of a nice designed pwr supply.. That is were the juice for the pre's/eq/comps come from, a shortage could mean that your pre will not perform as it should..
An healthy pwr supply it's even more important on converters...but this is another story..

Just my 0.02$,

Bests,

Cheu

I had an OSA rack and had no problems running any 500 series with it....even the original Chandler Germ pre-amp ran fine with it.

However, I did read enough about some units having problems that I kinda shied away from it and eventually sold it for a BAE which has been a joy.

You might also consider the Radial Workhorse 5000. I just ordered one of those today and I am looking forward to receiving it and playing with the summing mixer.

A little OT: I just ordered an API and BAE rack. The BAE come with phantom power.

Are there any 500 modules, that will be damaged when plugging them into the BAE?

thanks all
being a cheap skate that i am i'll probably get another 6 slot LB--best bang for the back by far

actually, maybe that's not a very good idea ... got the LB not more than 2 months ago and i've already filled one! it's more addicting than crack! argh!

(ps. concidentally, just as i was typing this, there is an ad banner on gearslutz ... saying "i heard his mix, i had to sigh, i wish i'd used, an API" ... worst ad banner ever?)

There's a reason OSA isn't around anymore... There were a lot of issues with those racks.

I have had the 8 space for years. No power supply issues, but the metal work is really bad and only allows for 7 modules to fit.

If I were you, I'd look into a different brand.
