Is there such thing as a mixer audio interface?

Just like the title says.

I want to get a mixer. I currently have a fast track pro and use cubase. Is there a mixer that can act as an audio interface as well? Like for example, if it's 8 tracks, can I 8 separate corresponding tracks in Cubase?

I was looking at the Behringer Xenyx 2442usb, but from what I read, it is very misleading and doesn't seem to work as audio interface.

I'm also open to alternatives.

Sorry if all this sounds confusing...

i thought all those usb attach devices were just interfaces with mixers added to them. why do you say that behringer is not an audio interface ?

I guess this is a great short term budget solution, or a solution for a production room with no intention of upgrading. But if you are like so many of us, you are going to be upgrading and improving your rig incrementally for the rest of your life. A mixer-interface combines your mic pres, DAC and ADC, and computer interface all into one handy box... making it expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and increasing the learning curve. Instead of changing just one thing, you have to replace the whole works. This type of solution certainly has it's place, and may be the solution for you, and if you spend enough, you may never out-grow it. But the bottom-priced units... you'll outgrow them quickly.

the V-STUDIO series from cakewalk are not expensive at all.
not sure if that's what you're looking for, but the v-studio 20 is killer.

i love the design. unfortunately, i'm a protools guy...
but when i saw the v-studio 20 i almost s#it on my pants.

I can't speak for quality, but the design is incredible.

I agree with the post above. 8 years ago, I was similarly looking for all-in-one boxes. Then I realized I wanted better conversion, or a different flavor of pre, or different EQ or compression on Mixdown. Right now, the best bang for the buck is the Presonus Studiolive. The conversion on it is ok and so are the pres, but the headroom and in them is nothing like a Daking, Burl, or even Focusrite for that matter. Even back at my school where at the time we had a DM2000 into HD(they have an AWS now), everyone avoided the pres in that thing and you're talking about a digital console costing over $10k. Those pres don't suck and definitely wipe the floor with anything Presonus would come out with in the $3k ballpark, or even Allen & Heath. The only other real option would be maybe the 02R, but for that price why not get a Lynx Aurora, an ISA 828, a Daking 4pre and maybe a killer single channel of Mercury 72 or something for vocals, guitars and even bass. Round it all out with a UAD quad nevanna and you really can't go wrong. I just don't think you'd get as good a quality with any all-in-one unit and by the time you do get something of amazing quality that you won't outgrow, you could have bought separately and gotten better conversion, better plug-ins, a variety of flavors for your front end, etc...

Just food for thought....maybe the convenience is the most important thing to you...if so, my apologies as I'm approaching it more from the tracking and mixing at the highest acceptable levels for pro sounds....

Since this is the high-end sub forum, I'm gonna suggest stacking up some Metric Halo LIO-8's and use the built-in software mixer and channel insert plugin. This plugin actually operates inside the Metric Halo box, so it's doing no harm to your CPU.
The software mixer can be used to route your DAW signals into it too, so summing is also an option.

Yeah there are mixers with interfaces inside, and interfaces with mixers inside. The Metric Halo is a beauty in the second category... would like to see a *serious* touch screen controller for it.

Mackie Onyx. Allen & Heath GSR24. The new Behringer 32 track digital will be able to record 32 tracks to USB. Presonus makes 3 types with FireWire out. Yamaha 's got some. Tascam 3200 + 4800.

What I'm trying to say here is that there are plenty of options in all price/quality groups.

I would categorize this as "serious"! Want one for my ULN8 rig

Thanks everyone! I know I should have put this in low end stuff. (I didn't know these would be high end, sorry). I think I'm going to get an 8 channel audio interface, like Presonus firestudio project.
