| Gear maniac | Another MIC Question
I'm sorry if it's not high end class in full, but I decided to post a thread here because I assume the folks have some more 'real equipment use' experience in this corner of gearsluts.. As I am from the preety small city, and very small country in europe I'm NOT in situation to try some microphone models.. To cut a long story short I need a new mic for vocals use primarly. (mainly hiphop/triphop/neo soul) But still would like to capture some guitars/strings etc from time to time.. The pres I own at the moment: Great river ME-1NV, Joemeek VC1Q As I feel the u87ai is a bit overpriced (is it?), so somehow I reduced my criteria to 2 or 3 mics for now, and they are: 1. Peluso 2247 Le & Se - tube mics (can someone tell me what's the difference between 2 of them except in slightly noise/ratio in favor of SE? Because I can find SE for 250 euros less than the LE) Any experience from the first hand (owners/ex owners) would be wonderful. 2. Brauner Phanthera - solid state (I know there's not a bounch of them in USA, but still there's someone from USA or not who had experince with this mic I'm sure) I'm checkin out some gefell mics too.. 3. Or do I need to save some more for the u87ai after all? Decisions, decisions... ![]() Feel free to suggest mics in price range around let's say 1500 euros Thanks in advance

I'm reading the forum 'bout peluso tonight.. They started to throw chinese bs in peluso line? Is that true? Or the better question is, is it true that newer pelusos sounds preety much worse than they used to? If they are forget it, I'm gonna stick with the german architechture.. |

For vox it would definitely be the Phantera over U87. Have never used a Peluso so I can't comment there. |

| I agree with that comment. Remember that Phanthera is a mic with a transformer, so it doesn't sound so "solid state" at all. Although, in the end it will depend a lot on the qualities of the voice tracked. You will have to try it out and hope that you won't have to send it back. I've had very good results with it on many different voices so far.

Brauner could be a great choice, as any Gefell or a Violet Design Amethyst Vintage or Globe Vintage.. If you want a tube mic at that price check out the BeesNeez, good stuff.. Btw it all depends from the source.. all of those mentioned above could give you great results IMO. just my 0.02$, Bests, Cheu

Yeah.. I have been working with both amethysts - standard & vintage, and I can say they're quality mics. I liked vintage a bit more on the vox because of his top end over the standard model. Standard model sounded a bit 'harsh' on some female singers voices. But I excluded them as an option 'cause I already own 2 models from violet range, (the black knight & the junior from recently) so why not to add some difrerent flavour? Panthera sounds tempting, some gefells and u87ai too.... |

![]() From Gefell check the solid state ones (maybe the MV692/UM70 among others) or if you could stretch the budget a bit and be very lucky..find a used M92.1 S (cardioid only, tube). Your search might end there..for now ![]() For taming some "harshness" a good ribbon could be great on vocals.. AEA R84, Coles 4038, etc... it all depends what you're after though.. btw both the Black Knight (which is a great mic especially considered the ridicolous price) and the Junior are NOT in the same league as the Amethyst Vintage and the Globe Vintage IMO. They are really at another level.. I like the Black Knight a lot, but I didn't like the Junior too much.. too bright in the top end for me... Bests, Cheu

To tell you the truth I'm not in true love with any of those 2 babies... I mean black knight IS probably one of the best buy picks in it's price range, no doubt about that... It's preety EQ-able, good for some sources but not as a first vocal mic.. That's my opinion. And I recived the junior as a gift from girlfriend for my birthday, so it's valuable to me ![]() As far as I'm concerned, I'm sure Gefell M92.1 S is a good mic. But I prefer to buy a brand new thing this time, based on ex bad experience with ebay and used mics.. I think I'm closest to phanthera at this moment.

I think you can't go wrong with the phantera.. If you intend to record a particular singer, it might be better to check it out on her.. I think that if you're buying something new, your proaudio store will be happy to let you try out the mics for a week or so.. sometimes happens that another one might be better suited for a particular source..It really all depends from the source..(also cheaper..on some extent is not really the price that counts). If it's for general/allround vocal mic..well.. I'm sure the phantera it's a helluva allround mic ![]() ciao Cheu |

Yeah, I'm gonna use it for a bounch of different voices of course... But after all, I have to find out how the mic matches with mine. That's the most imortant part ![]() Those gefells with M7 capsules are tempting too... Decisions, decisions... And still decisions. ![]() I wish I could order both of them... I'm slutty, oh I'm slutty.... |

My phanthera arrived yesterday... It's maybe still too soon to say it, but I gotta say it.. Damn.. What a fine mic! Every frequency stands like it should... Thanks folks... |
