While I can't speak to your personal tastes, I can say that is one of the best sounding preamps I have ever heard and hands down the "go to" preamp in the studio that I work at for vocals, bass, and just about everything.

Great on everthing.. especially on stacked pop backing vox, piano they seem to like older ribbon mics[RCA,Coles] open's up the top..etc,etc Eq is sweet, but not at all aggressive like a Daking, etc. Not as gritty, not as colored as a neve. and you can't "overdrive" them like a 1073. doesn't do the Transient compress thing either... Another nice brush to paint with.I use them side by side with all the other usual stuff everyday. buy one..compare it to some other's, and if you don't like it they have a good return policy.. [two weeks I think] |

oh wait, just one more thing. if you were in my shoes and had to pick one almighty pre/eq combo for your vocal chain, to go with the innertube u87 and probably either an mc77 or la3a, how would you describe the relative strenghts and weaknesses of the wunder and the GR ME1-NV / EQ1-NV combo? thanks for your time and sharing your experiences with these units, as i wont get the chance to demo them. regards, richie. |

Maybe a thirty year old Neve is still slower . Maybe my grandma is still slower. It´s gear in it´s "best years", which you can buy now at exactly 1/2 of the Neve price per channel. some time ago we had a side by side comparison with: * PEQ-1R * Portico * Cranesong spider The wunder turned out to be the fattest and slowest, we prefered it on allmost anything (drums, guitar, percussion) except on vocals. The portico is the brightest and most detailed. Nice on vocals (with a VM-1). VERY fast transient response. A bit too much high end "sharpness" on most other sources for my taste. Contrary to its marketing this preamp doesn´t sound vintage at all. The Spider is in between those two: detailed but still some character. A workhorse. BTW that api 3124, which I tried last week sounded VERY similar to the cranesong... ![]() I´m still in doubt to risk that crazy half a year waiting routine for a shadow hills pre so I´ll probably order 8 channels of trusty and beloved wunder flavour instead . ![]() The wunder is about to become a modern classic.

I thought they sounded remarkably similar too, with the "Tape" DSP off and the FAT buttons in. But if you take of the FAT button or add some "tape" DSP the tonality of the Spider changes. Still my favorite preamp. Then I got some Shure A15S in-line pads (reversed the wiring) and stuck them on the 3124s outputs and hit the front end hard. It really does the transient compression thing VERY well. Totally different sound. I really dig that pre. BTW, what was the worry about? Regards, David

My worries about the api were: * in direct comparison with the spider it had significantly more hiss ( BTW also the wunder is more noisy ) * I just don´t like those api knobs + they are not detented * With my VM-1 into the 3124 I had to engage the PAD all the time and it still didn´t prevent it clipping sometimes...crazy My usual preamp comparison routine is: Mic -> three way passive alphatone mic splitter -> mic preamps -> line in/AD Spider ->AES-> PT not to compare apples with oranges Maybe api works for others. I just don´t get familiar with their stuff at all. |
