i have been using a combo of 2500 3306j and an ssl for pcomp duties whilst summing through a neve i used the ssl 1st into the api for a while the ssl to catch fast and the api on a slower broader , but took them off for other duties ( ssl on master api tracking an 808 & 909 with api 550b's after ) and hooked up the neve too p comp .....have to say like the neve where it is & im finding the trick to pcomping is not to bring it too much back into the mix but that's me

good luck

I finally found a compressor that suits my needs, it's the Elysia Xpressor 500. Does exactly what I want. I setup my parallel drum comp in an aux send and send snare and toms there. I can make the sustain of the drums longer...In warm mode the thing has a great vibe to it...In auto attack mode the sustain of drums gets longer but the actual sound (esp. attack) stays the same, If I turn the auto attack mode off, I can easily make the drums snappier if more attack is needed...Lots of choises...Me like!

For rock: Zener. The best.

For pump and squish: Manley Vari-Mu in limit mode. Very cool.

For transparent envelope control: Nail.

For pumping to the kick or similar effects: dbx160xt or similar sidechained to you guessed it.

For all out distortion and grit: Spectrasonics 610

And any number of cheap compressors and even stompboxes for dirt. The original Sansamp sounds kinda pumpy to my ears at some settings when you distort, mixing a bit of that in is cool sometimes.

Not a fan of:
C2 (for this task at least, the high mid coloration makes cymbals spitty sometimes)
Germs: liked the color, didn't like the compression.

+1 for distressors

or UBK FATSO

or TG1

or DBX 903's

also the Stand audio level 0r can be quite fun

or all of the above in small amounts...
