Studer A827 1" 8 track deal

Studer A827 1" 8 track. It belonged to a tv station and it has been in storage for years. I'm checking about the heads, but since it's a long drive, i wanted to know how much do thinks it's worth. Owner is asking something like $5.000 w/o the remote. I already have a Atr-80 2" 24 Tascam that i am pretty much happy with, so i wanted to know also if this would be a good investment for my analog studio. Most of my work is intended to be live band playing straight to tape, and maybe i could sync both machines. What do you guys think?

It is too expensive IMHO especially if there's no remote, only 8 track and you don't know the condition of the heads. Just near where I live a guy is currently selling two revised A820 24 track with new heads for about €5000 each.

I dont think bad pictures are the best way to evaluate a head, but since its a long drive downthere i wanted to make sure it is worth to even go, check it out:

The heads look good, but the absence of a remote makes it tough. Given that, it's worth a lot less. How were the previous owners using it without a remote?

This machine was bought in a auction of a bankrupted Tv Station.
Fortunetaly, i have a friend who happens to have a extra remote for this machine and is willing to sell. This machine has not been used for some years...

As far as price he can ask 5K but I doubt he will get it unless someone is desperate. I'd offer 2K and work from there.

ps if you need 1" tape I have 2 nos reels of 456 still in plastic.
Cool! If i make a good deal in this machine i'll PM you.

Studer a827 - video - Please help...

Hi i already had posted about this earlier, but i as i really need some urgent input to cut (or not) this deal, i decided to post again:

This a827 8tr 1" has been in storage for years and years. The owner sent this video (he's selling it as is). I got a very good deal, but a i don't want to go for it if it's too complicated to mess with.
Is this due to glued tape or something or related to motors?

Please help..

Just the money. I bought an A80 1 inch 8 track last year in great condition (1100 hours on the heads) for £1500.

If the motors are damaged - I'd stay away. To me it'd be worth about $700max. TO ME.

If it's just dirt in the rollers but still 8000 hours then $1500

If it's in perfect condition and low hours (like mine) then maybe , MAYBE, £3000.

ok, the point is, how can i evaluate the motors and overall condition of the recorder only for this video? Seller got it in a auction and doesn't even know what it does. Its a long drive to pick it up that would cost me $500. I don't want to spend that just to find i have to change motors or something that expensive. Then again, these studers are not very common in Brazil as they are in Europe and US. So could be a lifetime chance or......a nightmare.

i cant see any video?

i would say you really need to get a good tech to inspect the machine.
i don,t think it will sell in a hurry.

Having said that if it is in good shape 1 inch 8 track A827 will sound fab.

It's hard to tell in the video, but I think it's a set up adjustment. Is the capstan engaging?

The A827 is a complicated beast, it could be lots of things. From the video my first thought was the tape sensor isn't working.

But upon closer inspection it seems he has threaded the machine incorrectly, pushing the tape behind rather than over the (sorry, don't know the proper terminology!) small bouncy rollers. It will probably work fine if threaded properly.

I still wouldn't buy it unless you had someone near to you that knows about them or you really fancy a "project"

Unit is too expensive with high hours. Storage is very hard on the machine as bearings dry out, rubber becomes hard and we don't know how or where it was stored.

Machine will likely require $2500 in new parts and labor. Look at the hours meter. It is over 8000 hours.

Not a great deal at all. I bet the person bought it for less than $1500.

The heads looks good. I'd pay $2200 for the machine after careful inspection and testing (actually passing audio and quick recording from a cd player on a fresh reel) if everything works. That would be the going rate here where I live if in good shape. No way would I buy that sight unseen and not at the asking price. It's a nice piece of gear nonetheless and would make a perfect drum tracking machine... The lack of remote is a hassle though as you will need to locate the machine just near your console to operate... I've never seen a remote alone for sale.

I have a Studer A827 from a storage unit. I dont know the use history...reading your postings, it should go to someone who can out it to use before it deteriorates. We have had it alsmost a year, just storing it.
