Thank you sooo much for sharing your recordings...really like some of your songs too

I must say that I prefer the PEQ1R over the Germanium though (at least by hearing your files)

So you must have more than one Wunder pre then...or were you only using 1 mic on the drums?

Cheers,

Those samples sound rather dark sounding.
Q: Would you say this is typical of the 'germanium' sound? How does it compare to the speed of an API for example?

germanium jams...

hello...thanks again for the kind responses on those jams. just excited to finally "hear and feel the difference" of using some well-designed pres. Yes i would say that so far i've learned that the Chandler has a very chunky/smooth sound (pretty oxymoronic terms-sounds like I'm talking like opposing brands of peanut butter) , but with all the gain structuring options (2 knobs/2 buttons is plenty!) pad button is very usable for saturation purposes, but you can definately get a clean sound too. I just happen to go for the "gush" everytime so far. as i increase the feedback knob, i notice that the hi end rolls off, and the low mids chunk up in a way that is so natural that i think this is what people mean by "warm". when i did some lightly distorted les paul jr/ fender princeton/ coles 4038/ germ/ tracking the other day it brought on such a nostalgic connotation, it reminded me of the "white album" guitar tones. The psychology of recording through this circuit is such an ego massage for the player. Yet, the germs affect never sounds cheesy or hyped like so much of the bullshit gear marketed to the prosumer project market which i fall into. i do not need another box in the chain after the germ. low end is so full that the dynamics can get out of control, but that can be solved by mic choice/placement/experience...It also makes dynamics (sm7/beyer 201c in my case) "sparkle".... I say it is a great gift of empowerment to those "rockers" out who might have have only an Mbox and a '57, can now afford to step into a very "classy" music making machine, that is just plain "fun" to record with...and it is a leap in the right direction away from the "clean room" vibe of computer recording. If you record real acoustic/electric rock instruments like i do, you would probably really like making songs on it...

roundbadge: yes i am in LA...belly of the beast...eh....the city of quartz....suburban metropolis...where are you?

mattsson: thanks for sweet encouragment...From what i've been told, the Wunder is based on the "Albatross" console custom built for John Paul Jones of the Zepp, which used to record "physical graffiti" and "IV"-using "i think" the same exact cobalt-based transformer ore (newly recreated by the same folks in england). the bandwidth is huge, and the speed allows me to catch every nuance of a slamming kick drum without even spot miking. I guess (I am just speculating). The built in EQ is the only one i ever use. spot-miked bass guitar and kick drums absolutely SLAM through Wunder with a chime. low end is ridiculous and real! absolute magic for me...The quickness of the Wunder circuit allows it amplify out all frequencies with intact time coherency, which makes it different from a Neve circuit (which, as i have heard, we like for its slewed, phase-cancelled high end attenuation {"silk"}) i do not own a 1073, but i guessing my phoenix DRS-2 sounds like this (DRS-2 doesnt get much use anymore). phew...enough spewing from a "newbie". maybe the grand masters can shed a little light on us...I only wish Wunder made a ~$1000 PA 1 channel stripped down w/o EQ...because the PA 4 might be overkill for my little studio/budget...together with the Germanium, i've got a great little set of english-sounding paints for my "outsider art"....

back to your question...all those drums on "blue nile" were just the coles 4038 hanging over them. mono. we track drums and another instrument (piano/guitar) live using the Wunder and UA6176(one on drum, one on piano/acoustic) each to one side of my trusty old ampex atr-102 1/2" 2 track, then dump it into protoolsLE (24bit/96k) and overdub on the cpu...then mix back to tape...then back to LE at 16bit/44.1K. so there is no dithering or S.R.C. (then to a shitty MP3 on the web...e) hoping to get a multitrack tape machine/ small console when i can afford/learn it ... and put the Imac back in my girlfriends office upstairs...

thanks again, nico...

Chandler TG Limiter pluggin

Hello, not hog the cyberspace, but I must also say that the Chandler Limiter pluggin is the finest software i have tried since I bought MixPlus in '99(which i sold for a 002r and more anolog outboard). the demo is fully functional for ten whole tries. check it out on chandler's website ******//www.chandlerlimited.com i ended up buying it from VintageKing (with the Germanium) because i got so attached to it on one song's mix...by the way vintageKing is the Man. just be patient with him/them, as they are so busy filling orders and purveying the globe for the finest in boutique pro audio's accoutremonts- or you may come off as a court jester. i think email works best with them as they definately covering alot of turf. I also like the guys at Mercenary and Dave Marquette (who is saving some V72's from my amateur attempt at a rack job) are "great people" too...peace to all soundsmiths....nico

Germanium prompted me to make my first post

wow,

all I can say is wow. I have been sitting on these threads reading comment after comment on these germaniums, and I finally got mine in today after a two month wait........so here is my first ever gearslutz post.....

Holy Crap was it worth it. First of all the unit is just gorgous, and when I went back to work today to plug it in with the sample settings......the thing just shimmered. The feedback control is so dynamic and interactive, I love it. I tried it first with a Coles 4038 and had some luck. After a little while I tried my friends Peluso 2247 LE with my vocals and got even better crisp sounding takes. And lastly we tried the germanium (gain at 5, feedback at 3) into an ADL compressor (gain at 5 and reduction at 5) with me playing my Larrivee acoustic guitar and it was HEAVEN!!! I didn't want to take my headphones off, great work wade and all the guys over at chandler. It was worth the wait.

Oh yeah, the best part about all this is that since I was at work today (I am a live sound engineer at a large church in Memphis) I didn't have anything good to run our equiptment through for monitoring. So all the beauitful sounds I heard were still being crapped on my the behringer mixer we have at work. I can't wait to get it home and run it stright into my converter.

Anyway, I am Trevor. I plan on posting more in the future. Peace out.

Just got my grubby hands on it yesterday, but won't try it till the middle of next week. First impression is that those ugly bright yellow knobs are going to drive me crazy but that is really a very minor and unimportant, overly nitpicky observation. Build quality seems very good. I can't wait to tortute test this thing.

yellow knobs...

I really like the yellow knobs on mine, and personally would not trade for the blue knobs in the ads. i think it is a nice departure from the currently overplayed (but definately classic for the emi/neve-ish outboard) british royal airforce aesthetic of the light grey/blue...both look cool, but bright yellow also works as a visual cue that invites experimentation/knob tweaking which is what the germanium is all about. when you see the metering lamps illuminate, with shades of green,orange,yellow...the yellow knobs fit right in. nico.

also, if i'm playing in the live room, it's easy to tell someone who may not be familiar with my rack of pres, but happens to be closer to the outboard rack in the control room to just "crank the second yellow knob a little", rather than "increase the feedback control on the germanium"....

Maybe I'm the only crazy one here but those yellow knobs make it look like a piece of candy. But in all fairness I could'nt really care if the whole thing was neon pink I still would have bought it, and I did. Enjoy your Germaniums!

I'm gonna have to custom order the blue knobs so it matches the rest of my Chandler gear. I don't give a crap what it sounds like - if it looks cool, I'll force anything to sound cool
