Mic Pre Shoot out. no clips tho. vox.

Pres: Api lunchbox, Chandler tg2, Chameleon labs 7602.

Mics: Elux 251, u87 (new one), fet 47 (old one).

Todd and i did vocal tests.... this was strictly a vocal shoot out. we were singing higher with power with a whiney voice.. my voice is thinner, has more upper freqs, his is a tad lower with more lower end magic.

But here is what i noticed about all those pres.

The tg2 has this mid range boost that made todd and i sound a lot more nasal, it had good bottom, but sounded kind of scouped in some weird way.

The api totally exagerated my voice in the upper freqs making it a lot more annoying. i have a more whiney robert smith sounding voice. But for todd, it really brought out the highs in his voice that are not as present as mine, defined the lower mid range that was very complimenting to his voice..

The Chameleon labs was really strange, it did not have the upper ferq detail the others had, but the low mids and mid range had this gritter more full and smooth sound that i prefered over all on both our vocals. it worked very well with the u87 and fet 47. And in the mix, it seemed to blend a lot better, sound more pleasent. the api is like the razor in the mix. gives total speration, which can be great, or bad depending..

Mics: for me the u87 worked the best on my voice. i did not expect this at all. the 251 just doesnt work for me or todd really. the fet 47 is great if you want a darker vocal sound that has a lot of punch.. the u87 seemed to be agressive in a pleasent way, its sweet spot was about 1 to 2 feet away from it. the fet was better if you got up close on it.. def...

For me. the chameleon labs 7602 and the u87 won.

For todd the fet 47 and the api won.

The point of this over all was to show you that all pres can work differently for different singers, and same goes for mics...

The tg2 just didn't work for either of us with these mics, the one thing the tg2 was much better at was bass freqs.. def...
