Hey Langston, I see where your coming from, but idk if you listened to my shootout. The preamp we used was a GML 2032... that's about as transperant a preamp I've ever used, but it wasn't sterile, just this beautifully open sound. Peace, Min Sent from my HTC Dream using Gearslutz.com App

![]() I was making that comment as an aside regarding the tone of the old school beasties. This shootout demonstrates the point I was trying to make I feel. A different preamp with more color would have gotten in the way of the mics sounding their truest. I stand by my observations. You can hear the difference in high end on studio monitors and laptop speakers quite easily, maybe I have bat's ears. LOL Peace Illumination

| A quick correction... For the record, earlier in the thread someone suggested Dave Pearlman's TM-1 (U47) and I think you misunderstood it to be a TLM-103. The Pearlman TM-1 is a great mic and VERY different animal than a TLM-103. (Just didn't want you to miss that one by mistake -andrews |

No, I hear it too, but some of the differences were due to the oral expression I had on my face when testing. I was smilling when using the 47 so it has some other frequencies regestering. They aren't the same, but they both got the mojo. Heck, the U 87 was cool too ![]() Sent from my HTC Dream using Gearslutz.com App |

. OK, so Gene Lawson checked out my L47MPII for me, and it tested perfectly. My problem is, I'm comparing the mic to the Groove Tubes GT-67, which has a rather large bump at roughly 10-12kHz (so what else is new, you want something to sound "good", just hype 10-12k, and be done with it!) Anyway, I'm slinking away with my tail between my legs, because I'm so used to the 10-12k bump (which the 47 doesn't have), that I will sell my Lawson to someone who wants a mic that actually sounds more like a real U47. After tracking with a 10-12kHz bump for the last 5 years, I can't go back. ![]() I know, it's a bit like choosing a Yugo over a BMW, but what r ya gonna do! So, I'll likely be listing my L47MPII either here or on E-Bay, or both. If anyone's interested, PM me. I'm not interested in making money on it. I'll just sell it for what I paid for it. It's in PERFECT condition, and just tested by Mr. Lawson himself this week! Cheers - and many thanks for all your helps guys! EDIT: To be clear, the L47MPII does have a slight bump at 10kHz, but the GT-67 is roughly flat up to 10kHz, and the bump at and above 10kHz is more substantial. The L47MPII rolls off a few dB above 10kHz, whereas all those highs above 10kHz are hyped on the GT-67. Gene says Groove Tubes did this with a notched (Chinese U87 copy) capsule. . |

Sqye I'm laughing at all this ( didn't I say a 47ish mic wasn't what you were really after) Im glad you figured it out your quest should be required reading! Audio rule # 1 Neve knock what works, # 2 the classics are great , but great mimic is not about sheep doing what other sheep do, it's about individuals .

Well said, man!...hey, it's all about the marketing, right! To be clear, though - the reason I was originally interested in Lawson's 47, was that I picked it off of Lynn Fuston's Mic Shootout CD, which is the SAME CD I found my GT-67 on. Although, I did like the GT-67 mostly better on that recording. I was my favorite mic. And that was a blind listening test. I was only using my ears. No marketing involved. ![]() However, the problem with mic shootouts (and there are several) is that if you hear a dark mic before a brighter mic, then the brighter mic sounds EVEN BRIGHTER than it normally would (this is just one example). Anyway, at the end of the day, I can TOTALLY see why the 47 is such a classic mic for kick - especially with a pronounced beater, I could see the 47 taming that nicely with the tube. .

Thanks, man - yes, you are 100% correct. I'm curious to try the other mics you're talking about, as well. Well, I'm currently back in sw library and custom monitor controller land. Next is ADC/DACs. So, when I return to microphones, sometime this century, I'll be psyched to check out the C-12/251 vibe! ![]() There was a studio I worked in regularly about 10-15 years ago which had a C-12 that I liked a lot. Although, I was tracking a lot of female vocals and horns then, so it was generally a bit bright for my taste. Thinking about it now, it probably would work a lot better for male vox. Thanks, yo! .

If you have trouble selling the Lawson consider the 251 head, not a 251 but the vibe is their. As far as shoot outs my favorite is to hang a bunch for 1 take, or keep up one mic in the same position as reference from take to take! Also doing mic demos you start to realize 1 most have very little idea what sounds like what 2 one persons bright is another persons right 3 singers have a totally different idea of how they sound or how they want to sound Going in blind is probably the best bet. The best way to use a place like this is to reference something you know and how you hear it to how somebody else hear it and still take it with a grain of salt! |

Absolutely, agreed 10000000000% And yes, we will consider swapping Lawson's 47 for his 251 (or buying the capsule, etc.) But of course, you're correct. I'm essentially looking for the sound of the mic I already own - in either an accurate reproduction or some kind of enhanced version. So, if it ain't broke... I've been curious to try the L47MP for 5 years now, so I did. Again, because it's a mic I'd already liked on a recording. I don't typically get too revved up by hype here. So this was not my motivation. My ears provided the motivation. .

Plus the Lawsons are Soooo nice! Gene and Gail make you feel like your family has grown! I don't think of the Lawson system as a 47 or 251, I think it's a great system, that gets you into the ball park of a Couple of great mics for a Bargain , every combination of Lawson I have heard is Great on it's own merit, not if I'm looking for something to nail a 47, 47 fet or 251! Like it for what it is! Not what you want it to be! |

Plus a million. The Lawsons are Awson. ![]() Gene obviously has a serious passion for what he does. Again, the L47MP is a great mic. I was just looking for something brighter around 10-12kHz. .

The Telefunken AR51 could be a great choice if your a high tenor, Im not too sure about the part itself but others on GS have talked about a mod that telefunken can do apperently with a capsule upgrade it can sound miles better too, with great shape and compelling mid range presence
