High end studio xlr cables

Need advice and opinions on mic cables. I just noticed that I have a hodge podge of cables from pretty good to crappy. I would like to buy 8 new cables and I am trying to get an idea of what cost will be etc... ANY SUGGESTIONS?

http://www.redco.com/shopdisplayprod...n+Custom+Cable

$14.70 per cable if you go with 20ft. Redco "standard"
$4 more for "heavy duty" (good for stage and long runs, not as necessary for studio and shorter runs)

I forgot to mention

OK, like a dumb SH** I forgot to mention that I basically am looking for whether or not the Mogami Gold Neglex Quad Mic Cables are worth the hype and money. I am using those cables as a bench mark.

Mogami (non-Quads are those I use) are really worth their good name and they are rather affordable (easpecially bulk).
On higher-end side I am OK with Zaolas silver cables (dunno it might be woodoo, but I hear slightly more high-end content with them) for connecting gears involved in mixing phase where denser signals could require more resolution.
But Mogami can do the whole job on top level, no doubt.

Agreed, but I'd prefer Neutrik gold XLR, but make your own and you can set the length and save $ by buying bulk length cable.

By using gold XLRs you lose the self-cleaning action of nickle-on-nickle contact. Unless both contacts are gold, you're better off with nickle XLRs.

I have custom made Mogami Quad with Neutrik XLR (Gold) 15 years old not one problem cable.
Quad is not good for long runs (200 feet) but shorter cable (25 feet) quad have better noise rejection.

www.kimberkable.com

Check out the high end stuff. Some of these cost almost $3000 for a pair of 20 footers. They sound better than anything I've ever used, tested or listened to. If cost is no object, these are what I would use. Anyone in that budget that doesn't check them out is really missing something.

my friend makes custom length silver clad XLR cables and interconnects, with military grade silver ..quad conductor, teflon dialectric..they arent anywhere near in price to this "boutique" stuff, but ive owned/used Audio Magic, Acoustic Zen, Luminous, Kimber, etc...and my friends cables sound easily on par with those brands..I believe after lets say...200 dollars....the law of diminishing returns is in full tilt....while I believe in HQ cabling...to hear someone talk about "the electrons get along better because the cables create a positive atmosphere" sort of crap, I get irritated. dfegad "audiophile"

pm me if you want his contact info..He is an electrical engineer and does top notch work , pretty much any length or configuration you want. I prefer the sound of silver over copper personally..

I'm also a fan of non-quad mogami for studio work and I get my cables made by redco.com. Call them if you have questions. I have found them to be very helpful.

I recently got Cardas blue cable. I had heard them at Lucey's' studio and I could hear that sound in his recordings (open top, clean middle and tighter lows), as well as in cable comparisons. I'm actually selling some canare cable. Look in the 2nd hand section.

I've used the litz Cardas blue cable for 15 years. I find it to be somewhat dark, probably due to the high capacitance. Readers should try several brands first before making a single selection.

If you're going to audition cabling, do not overlook Gotham. http://www.gothamaudiousa.com/ They make a superb product at a very reasonable price and are very accomodating with custom jobs. Lew at Gotham is courteous and professional.

Yeah, maybe I'm not describing it that well, but sure try a few for yourself. It would be cool to hear that Kimber cable.

Agreed; both on the cable and Lew. FWIW, I really like the Gotham GAC-3. My two other favorites are the Mogami 2549 and the Canare Star Quad. Redco carries all three; a worthwhile endeavor could be to order one of each (either in bulk and make your own; I do and it's an economical way to go), or Redco will make them up for you. Try them all and find the one you prefer. IMHO, each of the three I mentioned are very high quality. Chris at Redco is very helpful: http://www.redco.com.
