M50

Hello fellow slutz

What's the difference between the Neumann M49 in omni and the M50? I used to think they were the same but maybe not?

Thanks

the M50 has a completely different capsule in the same housing.. The M50's is a small diaphragm aluminum, or sputtered mylar (pvc?) capsule, flush-mounted in a plastic/perspex sphere, which acts as an acoustic pressure equalizer. The net result is an omni that becomes more directional (and slightly boosted) at high frequencies.

A similar effect with a different sound can be found using B&K (DPA) 4003s with their 50mm APE spheres attached.

Very very nice microphones.

very pricey and hard to find too ... along with the 49's probably in the top 5 of most wanted mics. Very popular in classical recording.

Not just classical work... They are THE mic to have for scoring work. They are far and away the best Decca Tree mic out there...

I worked on a recording a several years back (just an assistant) that would make a Gearslut drool.... It was orchestra and chorus and the rig consisted of (as best as I can remember)

3 M50s (Matched by Klaus Hyne) through Millennia Pres
2 C12VRs as wides on the orchestra- Millennia Pres
2 MKH 40s on the woodwinds, Custom Jensen 990 pres (Beno May Designed)
1 B.L.U.E. U47 on the bass section (Jensen Pre)
Coles 4038 on the harp (Jensen pre)
3 Schoeps CMC6- MK21s on the choir- FM Acoustics pres

dB Technologies Converters (Blue Series) and a Prism AD2. Monster and MIT cabling, Mixed on a DA-7 to 6 tracks, recorded on a MX2424 and a DA-98 with Prism Bitsplitter... Monitored on ATC SCM50s.

Sounds like a fun one, Ben...
Last time I used M50s was at Skywalker's scoring stage... Did a string quartet record...

M50s were the main pickup pair, with "APE'd" B&K 4003s for way-out ambience
Sennheiser MKH-80s were the spot mics... tracked thru Grace and GML preamps to Benchmark Converters, and monitoring through the big Neve on the B+W Nautilus (they're no K+H, but I survived).

One of the easiest and most quickly pleasing-to-listen-to sessions I can remember.

Anyone here using the M150s?
