Thread Starter | what mic? omni for recording a band
i want to get a mic that works really well for recording a full band (drums, bass, gtr, keys, etc... no vocals) the kind of thing where you just put one mic up and position everyone around it to get a good balance. like those pictures you see where everyone is in a perfect horse shoe. what is a good mic for this? are SDC like avenson and Earthworks good? or is it better to use a LDC with multipattern like a U87? earthworks claims that there mics are great for recording rehearsals. is the omni band capture method (i just made that up) just as well excecuted or perhaps even better when 2 mics are used. i fell like that would complicate things. i like to be able to focus on the realtionship between one mic and the band instead of one mic with another mic which together are with a band. ok this is too wordy. help. |

One mic will work fine, I personally would put up two becuase I like the stereo image. They can be omni mics, two mics would give you a little more versatility. If you got a large diaphragm that would give you the option of vocals in the future. I love the earthworks, they are great mikes. But here are a few suggestions: Earthworks Neumann M149 Schoeps SE Z5600A (9 polar patterns; tube; warm with a clean top end; $750) |

plus, if they are omni's you have to worry less about phase issues. |

i use a pair of Earthworks TC30k's. never let me down as far as omni's go. I think the Avensons would do the job as well. and go with a pair. we have 2 ears, so use 2 mics.

I'd use an LDC like an 87, 67 or 47. You totally rule, it takes balls and commitment to do this. Be careful with the mic placement, record a little and make adjustments. Good luck!
