Large speakers like the V3110 will of course produce deeper low-end compared to near-field speakers and "trigger" the lowest fundamental room mode making proper bass treatment even more important. The position of the speakers will also affect the performance. The V3110 benefits from being position in or next to a wall and when the speakers connects with the wall there will be a natural bass build-up, but compensated for it will result in a more even bass response. The V3110 has a filter setting on the back for bass build-up compensation. Near-field speakers usually end up being positioned with a bit of a distance from the wall otherwise they might not be in near-field position. The distance between the speakers and the wall behind them will affect the lower-mid or bass response. I don't know why but near-field speakers usually don't sound that good when put up next to a wall, bigger speakers do. I work as a freelance technical writer for a couple of of professional magazines and when I review new speakers I always try to set them up in a couple of different control room. Every time I have the time to do that I'm amazed how different they sound in different rooms. Especially in smaller rooms. So, when buying new speakers I think it's crucial to try them out in your own control room and see how they works out. Because it's not just the voicing that has to be pleasing, they have to work well in your room. Quote:
The ATC 25's sounded wonderful and certainly gave me the impression of listening to a wavefront and not two speakers. It was just the price tag and the somewhat lack of sub bass that made me look further. When I reviewed the Quested V3110 I was totally blown away by the performance. Thick bass, punchy midrange with great clarity and mixes made with them translated very well from the get go. They are fun working with but at the same time makes me work harder than before. Ultimately the price tag is pretty fair compared to other three-way speakers of that size. Cheers Frederick My Studio | |||
