Nearfield monitors what to get??

Hi I'm looking for some new monitors, the room is not that big(it's a home studio, but also not that small is about 8ft by 14ft more or less) i've been looking at adam audio and dynaudio and i got a deal from a guy for a dynaudio air20 but never heard them i'm just wondering if anybody has opinions and also any other ideas i'm looking to spend max $5000 can go more than that, i'm looking for something that i won't have to change in a very long time.

I mix from rock, hip hop, country etc.

Ps: also saw some adam audio tensor epsilon any ideas on this??

Thanks for your help is much apreciated.

I love my PMC TB2S mkii...used to work with mackie, genelec, adam, event. Nothing is even close to the PMC's.

Get the PMC's and also get some proper room absorbtion material if you dont already have...cause thats gonna make a huge difference

I agree that all that you have tried is not even close to the PMC. But you have not tried the Neumann / K+H, ATC, Harbeth nor Geithain; all of which will give the PMC a rim for their money.

For a small monitor I think the new Neumann KH120 takes the crown at the moment.

Nothing against the PMC, of course, as they are still on my very short list of monitors you can trust. I found the baby DB1 well lagging behind the. K+H, though - but the larger TB2 was better; I think PMC pushed the transmission line just that bit too small with the DB1.

I agree, of course, about room treatment.

+1 for the PMC TB2 - it works for al kinds of music. I use them now for more than 5 years or so and never wanted to change to something else.

I still think I would go for a pair of the new Neumann KH120 and add a sub (KH800) if budget allows.

Look for some second hand sigma 6.2s. I doubt you'll find some as Earthworks didn't make that many but you never know.

You might check out the new trident HG3s if you are still looking when they are released- there's a huge pile of big names who have all said essentially that they will be the next big thing because they're that good.

I'd look into the Lipinski Sound L70

$6000 a pair. Sealed box, time aligned drivers, high headroom amplifiers, small form factor, seriously high quality company.

Lipinski Sound - Timeless Analog - products

Some Genelec 8250's. (or 8240's) They were 2007 TEC award winners....

They have an active system for EQ correction. What is nice it that this allso was verified by TEC as being just an awesome system.

AutoCal™ provides the industry’s first integrated process for complete automated measurement, analysis, and adjustment of every monitoring loudspeaker in the control network for both PC and Mac plateforms.

•Uses factory-calibrated Genelec acoustic measurement microphone (included)
•AutoCal automatically creates a compensation file for host soundcard
•AutoCal aligns Level and compensates Distance differences
•Acoustic Response Editor provides accurate graphical display of the measured response, filter compensation and the resulting system response for each loudspeaker, with full manual control of acoustic settings
•SinglePoint™ and MultiPoint™ microphone positions provide measurements for one, two or three person mixing environments (ex: mixer, musician and producer positions)

In GLM™ System
•8200 Series loudspeakers can utilize four parametric DSP notch filters and four parametric DSP shelving filters for each loudspeaker

•7200 subwoofers utilize four parametric DSP notch filters, plus bass roll off controls
•Adjusts correct crossover phase for all subwoofers in the network
•Vertical Axis Trim for situations where loudspeaker acoustic axis cannot be physically optimized

In GLM.SE™ System
•Each 8130A digital input loudspeaker can utilize two parametric DSP notch filters, plus the room response controls in the loudspeaker hardware
•SE7261A subwoofer utilizes four parametric DSP notch filters, plus bass roll off controls
•Adjusts correct crossover phase for the SE7261A subwoofer on the network

They are around 1500 euro a piece. So a set would be around 3000 euro.
In dollars. The 8250's are around 2600 dollar a piece. The 8240's are 1700 dollar a piece (and some change).

because the room isn't really big I'd say go for the 8240's and save some money for other stuff... (like an auralex kit or some nice made diffuser).

Seriously. These would likely slay all opponents of similar size.

PMC's fullrange and Proacstudio 100s here. Love em both when paired with a good power-amp. Main thing is: work with speakers a long time, you have to get used to them....how do they perform when the volume is turned, how to they perform a low levels, how do they translate in other places, how about transients etc....There are a lot competent nearfields outthere that at first sight (listen) perform all well, but you only know how they work for you in the long term. Listen!

true,

and the key is that part that says "work FOR YOU"

I can't stand Questeds and don't get on well with Genelecs.
they simply don't work FOR ME.

you have to find what works for you.

You would definitely want to hear them before buying them is the main thing I would mention...particularly if the Dynaudio Air series is a possibility. I haven't spent much time on those but the time I did spend, well was not real compelling.

We do however have a pair of BM15A setup in here right now and absolutely love them at any price.

At any price? I'd find that very hard to believe!!! You don't have to spend much more to get the floor wiped .... if you catch my drift!

thats funny...every great engineer I personally know says the opposite. Frankly, I would be just fine with them as my only monitors.

Lol
Honestly, I love Andy wallace's works that's done on ns10 more than his other works that's done on Genelec 1031. Those usually are his earlier works before 1995.(Genelec 1031 appeared in 1991)
His works after 2003 seems to get hot and hotter. On the other hand CLA still maintain andy wallace's early day's aspect: keep things clear and spread out in good stereo image without being over compressed .
We know CLA still mix mostly on ns10m only.

I have TB2s, NS10s and KRK-RP5s.

NS-10s still kick, for obvious reasons. KRK-RP5s are really good at filling in the gaps the NS-10 misses.

The TB2s are far and away the best monitors, but I don't think I would want them in a small room. They need space around them to really sound good.

yea...having had genelecs myself I find them to be Fatigue city and they don't translate worth a darn.

CLA is one of many, many guys still workin on NS-10's. I love them.
That being said we also have the ADAM S3X-H and they are great for when I need to crank it up.
