Are using the MR816 with whatever other Pre's you use?
If so how are you routing them into the unit? are you running them into the inputs?

Dude, this is pretty much the exact kind of setup(hardware) I am scheming...
How much of a difference does the D-Box make?
I was told by a past lecturer that Analog summing is only really worth it if you pushing real high-end converters? I would like to hear an actual opinion tho!

P.S sorry to revive oldish thread....

I use the TG2 and the Portico 5012 into the Burl B2 converter into the MR816 SPIF, so Im pretty much using the MR816 for its DA conversion and firewire

The pres can also be plugged into the two FX inserts on the MR816, which bypass the internal preamps

My Recordings/Credits

I really like the MR816. We recently recorded a grand piano (at OceanWay Nashville) with it 2X vintage AKG C12, 1X Royer SF-12, 2X Miktek C5, through the 816, that box sounds amazing, pre-amps and converters. I am blessed with about 76 channels of all kinds of mic-pres, I hold the 816 right up there in the top class. Correct, different mic pres sound "different", but "better" is a matter of taste and application. I would not be scared to do a whole album with just the 816 as mic-pres AND converters.

Me neither. They are very clean. Not bad quality at all. The conversion is pretty good too, far more musical than the digi LE stuff IMO.

I have had the MR816X for a couple of years and only recently I got hip to how good its pres are. I am relatively new to high end equipment and, even though the MR816 is considered prosumer, it turned me on to the value of a clean preamp versus vibey, mojo, etc.
Lately, I have preferred using this pre over the much more expensive and very highly rated seventies-style preamp/AD converter rackmount that I have. I do guitar and vocal stuff.
The only reason I hate the MR816X is because it does not have an aux bus; so, apparently I have no way of tracking with an MR816X pre going into a compressor, for example, before hitting the converters.
And that bugs the hell out of me. forget that jive unbalanced insert crapola.
At least my two channel high-end unit has an insertion point between the preamps and converter.
