| Lives for gear | mic & pre setup for recording live drums
Hi Guys, Studio next door Looking to get a nice setup for drum kit recording. We have an SSL 4000 G+ U87 Soundfield C12 SM57 1081 (mono) a few tridents Its mainly a mixing room but never the less ... we have £4k ($8k) budget to add some mics and pres . Looking at D112 421's 451's 414's and some more preamps (API, etc.). Any ideas are welcome. Cheers M

get the D12 instead, older and better. I love the Sf-12/24 on overheads. 414's on tops, 421's on bottom. Akg 451 top snare, 57's on top and bottom snare also, (watch your phase). you gotta run the toms through the API's. Kick and snare through neve 1064's. very versatile setup.

I agree with cbastriani...... Not a big fan of the D112 either myself. Either a D12 or a Shure Beta 52 is a better option IMO.... Although a 421/FET47 combo is the ultimate. Otherwise, 421/414's on toms, 57/C451/C460 on snare, Royers/Coles 4038 for overheads and room, (although the Soundfield is also a pretty good room mic!) API 3124 is a great starting point for talking about pre's. It's my personal fave, and is probably the easiest to demo in the UK. The other possibles (Wunder etc) are less easy to find over here. |
