It may hit 0VU peaks but I wouldn't count on it for +4 output with 20dB headroom like a normal line level piece of rack gear.
Just to be clear a mic preamp is still needed for most tasks.

Hmm, I dont know if I would want it to get brighter, darker, smoother, U67-ier if anything.

Plus I think someone should just post a DIY mod, 2gs for some machining, a tube, tranny and cap plus some testing and biasing is a little steep, non?

Since the passive electronics are potted I'm not sure that is the case. Maybe....but I doubt it.

I have an IT 87 mod kit here and it is more open on the top end, definitely not darker, and although it sound good in its own right, it doesn't sound like any '67 I've heard. FWIW.

The Inner tube retro holds up every bit to my U47 and 250 those are my three go to mics. I do want to to say the power supply is noiser than f@#k! Just stuff a bunch of pillows around it and hope you dont either burn your studio down or fry out your power suppy!

I hardly ever require a preamp with this microphone unless I am trying to record a whisper at a distance.

not my two anyway, the power supplies don't make any physical noise.

but the noise floor of the mic's output could be lower, in my opinion.

still, they sound wonderful and i'm very glad i bought them.

Turns out the tube was bad. So he overnighted a new one. GREAT customer service
Making the change over does in fact take only 1 minute - easy. I've only had an opportunity to record my own voice so far, but all indications are that this mic is better in every way - other than noise floor. Sibilence is GONE - it is harder to pop (I thought that was a function of the capsule, but evidently not) and I don't think I'll be reaching for EQ as much. More detailed report on the sound after some narration recording next week. . . .
Wait a minute,
u87ai in tube = U67!?

Love my IT87. Stayne's customer service is great. And I still have my stock 1978 U87 guts if I ever have the urge for lower fidelity...

I think that $4500 could be better spent on spelling and grammar lessons!

They are also easy to find!

If you look again, estudiohighend is not listed as being from anywhere - it's another poster who mentions Taipei. Nevertheless, you may be correct that about there being a reason, although not in evidence.
