M147 Sorry if it's not a real "high end" thread but. What do you think about this mic to track rap vocals? all I read Here about this mic is... shit. It was the "best" tube mic I can afford (get it 2nd hand for 1200 euros, street price here 2200). My first results are... better than my 4033 recordings. So my question is why is this mic so hated on? And I would like to know if you think I bought a K2... but 2 times more expensive? other questions: - can I "upgrade" my 147 changing the tube? what tube would really improve the mic sound? - what's the best (and clean) solution to reduce the output level of this mic (I would like to add more gain from my preamp, but i cant cause of the very high output level, I use an amek bc2, so there's no pad before the preamp, is it serious to use the line in?) thanks.

| Keep posting, and maybe change the title of your thread to, "Tube options for the M147 - any tips?" I actually love the m147 the way it is - that's just my opinion. I also love the 4033, but it craps out & gets all harsh on the really aggressive stuff, like harder rock or rap. You might also want to try some ribbons. Have you, by any chance, tried the 4060? Good luck.

People Hate this mic becuase neumann stupidly called it the M147- implying that it is somehow related to the venerable U47. It is not. Differnet beast. I have one and find it incredibly useful. I do think its overpriced tho.

It gets a bum rap for sure. Like all other mics, it works for some things on some songs, and doesn't on others... Price is stiff though. TH

no I never tried the 4060. I tried a u87... was not so nice for me but it was plugged on a mindprint envoice, so I think it was the pre. I tried a solid tube. It was not too bad but I think I like the 147 more (did not have those mics at the same time). thanks for replies.

I have the M147 and like the air .. comes very close to the Sounddelux's I have , but at half the price.. It either is NOT working on a source, or It is Great.. For some vocals it brings mud, for some it brings a sound that is magical... I like its build quality and looks, but you really should test rent one out , as it really is a HIT / Miss , type of mic, NOT good on everything... but blissful on a few...
