I definitely agree with Chuck on all of this. And speaking to that, I just saw the Jayhawks on Letterman last night- and what a reminder of just how true these statements are. Just sublime songs and performances. Find both of them on the web if you can. edit: ******//www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBGX_z6xuVU ******//www.cbs.com/late_night/late_s...nURETLYL&nrd=1 |

I interned here for a little while before succumbing to the distance from home and lack of pay for gas in the tank... It was a beautiful place. Does anyone have any insight to when/if it will be open again? Who the owner is? Anything? I know it's not likely, and everyone else is probably thinking the same thing but has no clue, but it's so worth asking!!

Just giving a bump here- we're all interested in knowing whether this will remain a commercial studio with the new owner- or just become a residence. Anyone? |

Thread Starter | Nope. See post 240. I know the owner, just doesn't feel ok to talk about too much. He seems to be a guy that enjoys privacy and I want to respect that.

Awesome... a bitchin' studio like that Deserves a Helios! Yet again we might be able to hear the slamming drum tones from 'In Utero'! Well Done! Wiggy

I wondered if John would buy it. Seedy use to be pretty cool. Tons of gear but it was really small. One thing John does have is gear! So it will probably be loaded with some goodies.

First of all, I'm really glad to see this studio is getting a rehab, and will be open to create music again publicly - we did some recording there years ago, and even with all the craziness, left with some really great sounding songs (and met some great people/engineers). Is this the Helios then?: Helios 32 Ch Desk from Island / Basing Street Studios (used) | VintageKing.com It's the same as pictured in this thread seeking information: Helios Photo Search It is mentioned in the article he may not keep the desk, right? Just trying to get the correct mental-image for the control room - would be pretty sweet to see a Helios in there, though with the current recording climate, I can certainly see where the upkeep and resale value of essentially a historic console may be prohibitive to keep it at a facility with so many other physical rehabilitation needs (and places that money could be spent). |

I saw a video made at the LA underbelly, what's with the untreated live room there's gotta be like .09 secs of decay in there! Must be boomy as he'll when tracking drums in there. Brutal!

EDIT: Oh, I missed yesterday's posts, sorry for the redundancy here: Here's a fresh Minneapolis Star-Tribune article with the latest details on the (now former) Pachyderm Studio. According to the article, it's now owned and is being renovated by John Kuker (Seedy Underbelly). Kuker started Seedy Underbelly in Minneapolis back in 1995, and recorded local bands like Semisonic, Idle Hands, and Lifter Puller, before getting kicked out of the space, and moving it to L.A. in 2003. Here's a 2003 article about that. Looks like it might open this summer, as Seedy Underbelly North, with a desk from Island Records' Basing Street Studios in London. Hmm...Helios? MCI 500-Series? (Pachyderm's old Neve 8068 is being installed right now, at Organica Recording in nearby St. Paul, MN). C'mon John Kuker, fill us in! |

I hope that he was able to get the roof on the house fixed. Now I am no roofing expert, but there were literally trees growing out of the shingles. I can only imagine that with wood shingles, that would cause issues.... But I sure do miss that place. Even as an assistant/gopher I loved being out there. Just was soo serene. I scrubbed toilets, I scrubbed floors, vacum the floors and whatever else I had to do... It was hard because I make good money doing the IT thing during the day and have been doing that for 15 years, to then go and scrub toilets and clean was a bit of a humbling experience. But then I got to sit in on sessions and towards the end, assist a little. I got to meet a lot of really cool people. And always was learning something every day I was there. The room really was just a thing of sonic bliss on the drums. Hopefully I get a chance to see the place after it has seen some TLC. I heard a lot of rumblings about things before it sold. But Im glad someone interested in the studio bought it and hopefully they can continue to make music there for years to come. Thanks for all the stories BSig! I only met you once out there when I was with Derek DeMike. We were doing a session in the "B" studio. Momentary Prophets I think and you had a session in Studio A. We were running out of good XLRs between the two... I know you were mixing a session in A on the desk one of the days I was there, I wish I coulda sat in on it. No one I worked with ever mixed on the desk for any of the sessions we did. It was really just a front end for Pro Tools. I really wanted to learn the desk more than just as pre's and eq... Tim Davis

Looks like the neve is now in a totally untreated room. That's a bummer. Tim I didn't know there was a second studio! Was it a converted room or a full built out studio? |

I only assisted tracking 2 sessions in there but sat in alot of mixing sessions with the engineer I worked most with. We recorded a couple of vocals in the pool room. Momentary Prophet's 2010 album on bandcamp (song C.C.M.E) you can hear the pool room verb :-) It was a pair of tube nuemann SDC's at the opposite end of the pool room. I also heard of someone using a slap back by putting a room mic in the pool room and leaving the downstairs fireplace doors open. It was kind of fun being creative in the house but was a pain at the same time. People would be coming in and out of the house. So we would lock the door and most of the time people knew not to come barging in, but sometimes a good take could be ruined real quick. But it was only operational for around the last year and a half or so of the studio. Anyway, I loved it there. I would do it all over again if I could. But I wish the new guy luck. | |
