AKG C 414 B-XLS vs. C 414 B-XL II

Hey all. I've been digging up info on the differences between these two and know that the XL II has a bit of a HF rise in its response compared to the XLS. What I'm wondering is how big of a difference were talking about here and does it make a significant impact on which you'd choose for specific applications. I'm primarily looking for a matched pair to cover drum OH, piano, ac gtr, and vocal duties.

Anybody have some real world experiences/comparisons/preferences using both types and which you'd choose to own a pair of??

I have a pair of the XLS, very useful mics on just about anything. I use them primarily as instrument mics, but they have come in very handy as vocal mics as well...

Hello...

I have one of each; I like them both. I'm using them for acoustic instruments; some Blumlein and some M/S. No vocals or OH. I find I use the XL-II more often, as it sounds a bit more accurate to me, but this is all based on my room and how it sounds. The high end on the XL-II isn't like a tremendous high end boost or overly bright brittleness; it's more of a liveliness or prescence. Again, I like them both. If possible, try to get one of each in your room and see which one works best with your room.
