Atlantic studio in "Ray"

What do you think of the way they recreated it visually? Was it faithful to reality?

I don't think it would satisfy modern expectations of acoustic quality (let alone technology), but this studio looked so cool. As someone who plays music, i find its general atmosphere it very subject to inspiration and ease, probably because it doesn't feel like a proper studio, but more like a living room. I guess it was the same sort of vibe in Van Gelder's Hackensack.

You bring up a very interresting point of which I ponder often.

We spend so much time conceptualizing and building and insisting on "perfectly" designed acoustic spaces...and yet when I look at and read about the studios where my favorite music of the past 60 years was recorded and I see tiny rectangular control rooms with "gasp" parallel walls and tracking spaces which were built in old warehouses, theaters and office buildings...

Makes you think

I found this elsewhere: "In the early 50's Atlantic records recorded in the middle of Manhattan (56th st) on a small upper floor. At night they would stack the office desks and use the room to record John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, the MJQ..."
