Congrats & enjoy the work - complimenti e goditi il lavoro,

PS: Of course the API 1608 is a wonderfuldesk, but I do understand your quest for more options/recall/control/metering/diversity.[/COLOR]
What is it about the 88RS's dynamics that you don't like?

Hey there Greg / Mr.Analogue Baby!

Thanx for asking...
Is it because U found it unusual/unlikely, or because there is some detail U don't like, too?

It's 3 things (and we ARE talking details & minor stuff on a very, very high overall level, just to be clear - I'd NEVER use often abused Gearslutz favourite expressions like "bad/crap/sucks/so&so blows it out of the water" etc regarding ANYTHING on that desk - I literaly meant "not a fan", as in just not totally crazy about the dynamics section):

-a certain "softness" to the compressor (when it works, I mean on certain sources/instruments/tracks, it can be great, when it doesn't, I sort of feel let down by the non-improvement it gives...perhaps it's me expecting too much, or the SSL use-one-on-everything disease, which obviously leads to occasional not happening moments)
-the fact that the comp gain reduction display and the pull-for-fast controls don't always give me exactly what I'd want (sometimes when I see the leds moving it feels/sounds like it's already doing -relatively- too much, and sometimes the timing could be a bit...even faster than that "fast", or other times I'd wish for inbetween what it does when it's pulled up, and when it's down)
-there's a certain "graininess", I find, to the noise gate on quick releases, especially with bass content heavy sounds like toms, kick drums; especially if used while tracking, i.e. from the live/mic-ed source, a tad more than if from off tape or recorded source. It's lovely in expander mode, but I always get bothered by the noise gate, regardless of the hysteresis setting.

This last one is less subtle, for my taste & to my ears, than the previous two points I described.

Mind U, I find exactly the same on Neve VR dynamics, was thinking RS would be very different.
Funnily enough, albeit in an altogether less pleasing manner than on the real, hardware thing, I found these same three points present/replicated also on the UAD RS88 plugin.
Go figure.

But, speaking of the things I like on those desks...
Pres.
Eqs (love 'em!).
Workflow.
Channel metering "truthfulness".
Master section functions & capability.
Mix buss character/"breakup point"/sweet spot.
Sound. Sound. Sound.
It's a producer/engineer inspiring and client impressing desk to use - all lovely!

While I'm at it, let me congratulate U on your studio, and on the reeeeeeeallly informative and detailed bulid/thread U kept going, here.
Never posted there, but follwed it quite a lot.
Should I ever be in Liverpool, that's one "tourist attraction" I'd put on my map!

Cheers,

A

I sold a 32 channel without Eq's that i put in a 500 vpr box and with the some money i bought a Neve Genesys 32 input/ 16 channel with 8 1084 EQ, 8 88rs Dynamics,Encore automation + Software, Total recall, 8 mic pre's with 1073 transformer.
Neve Genesys is understimated and reason is that Neve makes no promotion for it, and if you search information you be disappointed because there are very little evidence.
What i considered that convinced me to buy Genesys:
1 i have 8 pre that are the same on 88RS THE SAME, not similar
2 i have 8 pre with transformer that sound identical to 1073dpa, that i love!!
3 I have 8 1084 EQ that have identical circuits as classic 1084
4 i Have 8 Dynamics of 88R
5 Encore automation
6 Total recall that works perfectly
7 Daw control on the desk
8 2 Insert per channel!!
9 Groups with fader and with insert!!
10 2 cue mixes!!
11 A real in-line console with 16 monitor path with insert. and you have 32 real channel for mixing. You push a button and you have level of monitor channel on the fader and you can automate and recall all.
Metering is really amazing with same bar led of 88R

But first Genesys is a console with a big sound really a little 88RS with vintage tone!!!
I am curious why you started this thread. Are you looking for our approval? Obviously you spent time checking out the consoles out there and you chose the one that fit your needs the best. So why are you asking, what do you think? What we think is irelavant, what you think and how it meets the needs of your studio is what it is all about. When you get into high end gear, its all about personal preference and work flow you like best.

Thanks for the kind words!

Well I was just wondering really, I knew that it would be a "taste" thing really. I personally don't like SSL EQ but again it's my opinion, they are great eq's just not to my taste.

I do really like the dynamics on the 88RS as a "utility" Chanel dynamics. But couldn't be without our other compressors.

Would be good for Tobias L to chime in here with his opinion......

No prob, all well deserved.

Yes, I can completely relate to what U say.
For me say the Amek 9098 eq is all around wonderful, as I too don't like the SSL eq "flavour/feel" that much - or rather, I always find I can do what I want to (except look for "colour") with the mid bands, but the high & low bands never get me quite exactly where I'd want to go.
As for gates, I really like the way the Aphex 622 "logic assisted" gates work & sound (so I bought my own, as they're not usually available, or not enough), or curiously enough Amek's "Supertrue" Virtual dynamics VCA gates, as well as the Soundtracs Jade superfast onboard gates (by LA Audio), or the much less tweakable/flexible SSL onboard gates..
As for the comps, the outboard gear obviously has its' place & use; nobody desiging that or any desk was probably ever aiming at the dynamics section being the be-all/end-all and replacing entire outboard racks, it would be absurd.

It's all extremely subtle at these levels of gear, a bit splitting hairs, and indeed it's a flavour/taste thing, possibly also a habit/workflow thing.

And "utility" is a nice word in this context, just psssst... don't say it to the Rupert fetishers!

Nice talking 2 U - cheers,

A

Classic GS conjecture!
I stand corrected
