Which Summing Mixer

I am soon going to buy an analogue summing mixe. Has anyone done a definitive a/b/c etc.. test for different summing mixers? ie. same mix through different products? In your opinion, which comes out on top? I tried the Tube-Tech and the Folcrum+Flamingo. Have to say, although they both pissed all over Protools internal mix buss, the Folcrum+Flamingo combo came out on top for me - deeper, wider and more settled. Anyone else? Dangerous, Neve, Audient, SPL etc... Cheers.

I haven't checked out all those units, but have to second Shaman's opinion about Mixdream. Very good unit. Clear sounding and very musical.

Well didn't hear all, but most incl Dangeorus, Tube Tech, Folcrom.

For versatility I've chosen for present summing setup two different devices:
Nicerizer 16 + Mixdream

Simply said each has so strong own merits that now to me seems very hard to do production with only one of them, but if it should be one it would be Mixdream.
But Nicerizer is really nice box, too.

I own a gorgeous sounding Neotek Elite. This thing puts out stellar mixes with a bit of help from the old ears. However, sometimes, and one of these times happened today, I need something different. So I load up the Folcrom into the Neve Portico and then to the RMS 755 Compressor, and magic happens. I love that combo, on some mixes, it sounds better then the Neotek. It has a very quick midrange and tight bottom where the Neotek has a more lush midrange and puffy bottom. So I'd say go with the Folcrom and a nice two channel pre, I don't care if you buy it from me or Fletcher or War.. the thing is the real deal.

I thought I had it all figured out until I saw the Shadow Hills pre/summer.

DAMN.

I'm pretty content with the Folcrom, Buzz Audio, 747, RMS chain.

Hey Bang , if you dont mind me asking, do you have the silk button engaged
when doing this?

Also im restricted to 2 high quality outs atm, would it be worth passing a full mix done ITB through the portico before hitting the RMS 755?

Thanks for the help.

folcrom- portico +silk (often, although equally often not).

I like the HP filter on mixes sometimes too. Esp. hiphop -can really focus the bottom on certain mixes ( ones with screwed up subs).

No desire to Hijack, but WHICH Portico?

Are you using the 5012, or 5032 after the Folcrom for tone? Very curious, as I expect very different results. Apologies if this is seen as a hijack.

Aurora Audio and Phoenix also have a summing box...though I expect if I were looking for a summing box and price were no object, I'd go straight to Neve AMS.

I'd say yes, it is worth it. It'll add a little color, little flavor. Couldn't hurt.

I'll go for Folcrum + 2 API 512c pres (more pounchy and open than the Portico). Am I right?

so, Bang, what's the difference between the Portico way and the API one?!
I'm very interested in your opinion, as you already use the Folcrom + pre summing solution

There are a lot of good ones. Has anyone mentioned the API 8200 system yet? Sounds incredible.

But for much less money per 16-channels, the Folcrom/Portico 5012 is sweet. And I'd go ahead and add a Portico 5042 tape emulator, too.

I love the Folcrom Neve Portico combo. Paired with the Waves SSL eqs and the RMS comp after the Neve, you have no excuse not to mix with world class sound. I tried the Folcrom with APIs and liked that as well. Midrange was a bit more pronounced then the Portico. If anyone has any questions on the RMS stuff, gimee a shout.

Hey Bang,

How does your setup compare to the API 7800/8200 combo?

I believe you have tried that before also right?

I was just wondering because I have the API setup.
I've been considering selling it because I could get a Folcrom and some API pres or another Vintech X73i to go with one I already have and I would still have some money left over for a ROLLS bus comp.

I know this is something I would have to hear for myself but being that you have tried both and ended up with Folcrom setup I thought you would be a good person to ask.
Also I've heard some of the stuff you have mixed and it truly ROCKS!

Thanks,
KC

Really. I thought about getting that when I got the API setup but the band I was working with at the time really wanted the API stuff so that was that.

Does the Chandler have more color, more option, have you heard the API 7800/8200 combo?

Thanks,
KC
