Purple Audio Biz, Neve-ish or API-ish ?

Well, i'm going to order my pair of Purple Audio Biz pres in a few days. I'll use it for drum room mics (with Royer ribbons), heavy guitars, sometimes overheads or snare, and maybe bass and vocals.
I do already own API pres, and i want something more "creamy", "open" and "clear sounding", maybe more Neve-ish. The Biz has an interesting knob that can add amount of color, and also has a lot of gain, which is good to use with ribbons.

How would the Biz compare to Neve ? Will it be more close to the API sound ?

If you have advice on choosing others API lunchbox rackable pres, please give it (Shadow Hills comes to mind, and also A-Designs, but I have to wait a long time to get the pres, and I need them quick since I have important sessions soon).

Thanx.

I can't specifically answer whether or not it sounds like a Neve....I can say you'll probably be very happy with it and it makes a nice contrast with a 512.

If you already have an api 500 style rack you could also check out Old School Audio. They are very much like api but the mutant Lundahl transformer model has a sweet hi end and big low end on it that takes it beyond api .Thats the one I still want to get. The purple seems like it would be cool too, although I haven't heard it or the other pre you ask about.

I just got a Biz to contrast my APIs. The little I've used them so far I can say for sure they are more "open" and "clear sounding". Not so sure about "creamy" but the dang thing has got loads of different textures, it's like a treasure hunt. It seems to me generally more smooth in the mid-range then API, not as aggressive. Never used a Neve :(

I would agree with whats been said so far...

The Biz to my ears is tough to classify.

I guess it has more of an API vibe but it has several different sounds depending on how hard it's pushed. It can be open when run clean and pretty aggressive when driven.
The DI is cool too.

Well, i have to say i've been very happy with my biz. It has a very wide range of sonic textures between the normal and dual gain modes. I would also agree that it is a very open sounding pre, with the option of very clean or dirty.

i don't own an API, but have used them a couple times. I would definitely agree with this statement in that the Purple pre really is a different animal altogether versus Neve/API.

I agree with that except for the latest Rupert Neve Designs - I hear a similar hazy color comming from both, but that's it really.

If you want "Neev-ish" check out the Vintage Designs "M-581"... if you want "API-ish" check out the API 512c... if you want a great all around pre-amp that sounds like a Purple Audio "Biz" check out the "BIZ MK"... it's a unique sound with unique functions that is truly remarkable.

Peace.

The Biz is a really sick pre. I am always surprised at how little i see it talked about on this board. I don't think you will be disappointed.

The Mutant... I love that thing. A great value in the 500 series pres... You can listen to it on that shoot out. "OSA-L... It hangs with the best of them and it costs a lot less than those front runners. The Mutant and my P1 gives me a lot to work with.

I would just get more of the same pres!

Apis can do everything.

Maybe more mics?

I have 2 of the Purple Biz pres. for drum room mics, I love the Purple. You can't compare them to Api, Neve etc., They're in a class all their own.
I highly recommend them.

Honestly, I would classify them closer to the Pacifica more so than API or Neve. But then again, they have their own character and are very versatile. So yeah, they do sound unique, but I can usually come pretty close to matching the sound of a pacifica by keeping it in normal mode and tweaking the input/output ratios.

Everyone is pretty dead on with their descriptions of the Biz, it's hard to beat for a versatile do anything pre. If Neve is what you crave, the Avedis MA5 is king IMO. Although it's not a Neve clone it has the Texture of a 1073 and fills the same hole. The 28k feature really opens it up on top. Kick, Bass, Guitar, Vox whatever, the MA5 rocks them all. I have 2 Biz, 2 MA5, 2 OSA MP-1 and an API 512; it's a pretty diverse palette of sounds to work with. I frequently wish I had more of one or the other depending on the session, but I haven't really needed a sound that one of them wasn't capable of producing.

I have to agree. The OSA L ( Mutant) is a nice sounding pre! I have the L-3 ) sounds good). I have the Biz ( sounds good). But I find myself using the L ( Mutant) more and more. It sound....hummm...natural?....It doesn't add any "sheen" to the top end, but still it's clean up there... I still wanna hear a MA-5 tho"......(YMMV

I used the Biz tonight in a session for acoustic guitar and vocals and it totally beat out the API and Neve Pres for male baritone vox. much more top end than the api, but less mid forward (so i would still stick to API for drums), and we just automatically used the Neves for stereo micing the guitar, as we only had one biz, so can't compare it there.
