Thread Starter | Helios Type 69 pre/eq - 500 series
Hello Read everything I could posted here about the Helios brand. The Hellios type 69 pre/eq 500 series module was recommended to me. I want a different flavour to record electric guits. Currently using a 512. Have you guys used this particular Helios pre/eq on electrics? If so, what do you think? recommended yay or nay? Thanks to all. |

what microphones are you using? a different mic will make WAY more difference than a different pre amp. |

I use a 57, an e906, Sm7b and a Peluso R14. Either individually or a combination of either of them.

Given that the original consoles were used to record a bunch of Stones and Led Zep records, I have a feeling they will be alright to record electric guitars with.

Just a slight warning... the Helios is a very colored sound, not neutral, unnatural low end, not much control over the frequencies but.... It does sound unique and if you like the sound of the recordings made back in the 1970s and you want to get a similar sound, you can't go wrong... Remember, that back in the 70s, the entire tracking and mixing was done mostly on the same desk which gave a glued feeling to the mixes done on the Helios desks... some of the more familiar stuff recorded using Helios: Stones 10cc Led Zep Blodwyn Pig Genesis Ten Years After Jethro Tull King Crimson... and many others (if I left most of them out) Think of the music of these bands from the early 70s to get an idea of what the Helios will sound like... To me, nothing like it or compares and I just love the sound this desk brought to some of the best albums from my past. Jim |

I own a 512b and a Helios 500, the Helios is my newest pre so I haven't used it that much yet. The Helios is definitely a way different sound compared to the Api. To me the Api has more punch or sounds a little warmer or brighter than the Helios , I really don't know how to describe it. The Helios also has the stepped gain, which takes some time getting used to. I like the Helios allot and most applications I've tried it on so far I actually liked it more than the Api. The Eq on the Helios is pretty cool too, i really like the Mid range on it.
