Slutz in LA

Hi Guys......

I've posted a few times here.... but i would say most of my questions have been answered simply by reading.... I've actually been following this site for years now... It's Pretty Cool....

None the less, I have a somewhat of a challenge ahead of me... I've been trying to decide what pres/comp and potentially mics to put in front of my DAW... What's kills me is the fact that I've spent money on pieces without actually hearing them first only to be disappointed in some way or another....

So, I've sold several of my pieces so that I can obtain a few pieces that everyone here raves about.... But before i purchase i was wondering how or where in LA could i hear a 1073 dpd/dpa, Great River Mp-2nv, 512C, 33609jd, or drawmer 1969 mercenary edition, C2..... It's a toss up between those pres and compressors... I have 10,000 to spend....

Do any of my local slutz own these pieces and are willing to let me hear them.... I guess I'm just really trying to make the right decision... Also, any owners of these pieces willing to share their experiences or why they chose these pieces above others mentioned... I'll be mainly tracking in synths and recording vocals... Mostly R&B and hip/hop.... Funny, I was at a studio in burbank and wasn't really impressed with the 737... but the engineer was so eager to tell everyone he had one.... LOL...

I know that vintage king has these, and some other stores but they are not local... So if you could help me I'd appreciate it....

Thanks,
Kerry

vintage king has an la rep. I think his name's Jeff. Otherwise, Mercenary has a pretty liberal return policy.

Thanks, GSHARP for the reply man.... I was thinking that maybe that could happen... Is There a really good rental company local that you or others could recommend that stocked the gear i listed earlier....

Thanks,

Kerry

Try Platinum Audio Rentals or LAFX and rent for a couple of sessions. The going rates on some of these units are $30-$50 for a day, and if you get it early one day and return it late afternoon the next, you can cram two sessions in with it so it pays for itself.

How many channels do you need? $10k is a good amount...heck, I LOVE my Neve 1073 --> Distressor rack (which goes just about everywhere with me -- I'm using it right now). You could get a two-unit rack/ps, two Averill 1073's, a couple of DI's, and two Britmod Distressors and still have enough $$$ left for a happening mic.

A Designs rules, by the way. Check 'em out. The rackmount Pacifica is AWESOME!!!

If you're doing channel-intensive work, you could get a Soundcraft Ghost or something for the synth/MPC/drum machine stuff (and monitoring, etc.) and still have enough $$$ for a high end mic/pre/comp chain.

Maybe take one of your clients into aheavily equipped studio for a session -- tell them you'll be doing a 10-hour day and trying stuff (even if you could usually do it in 5 hours). Then if you take a small loss or break even, at least you'll be able to hear everything.

Gregg... Thanks for the reply.... really appreciate it... Right now All I need is too solid channels of pre/comp/ possibly eq... Thanks for the recommendations on rental areas in LA.... Maybe, I'll try those out.... I'm tracking alot of synths in through my Rosetta... I had a liquid channel, a 6176, which I grew to appreciate after a while... but I want to get 2 of the best possible pres for vocals, and my synths, mpc, etc.... So if i could patch my gear through the dpd, or mp-2nv, that would be great.... but i've got to test them out.... Any other solutions you can think of??? Anyone???

Thanks,
Kerry

Vintage King in Los Angeles

Hey Kerry,
This is Jeff with Vintage King LA.
You and anyone else is welcome to take advantage of our free, no strings demos here in the Los Angeles area.
When one of my clients is looking for say a mic pre eq, I will bring over a short list of contenders in their price range that meets their tonal aethetic.
I usually prefer to come to my clients studios so that they are familiar with the music, speakers, environment etc.
I have a full compliment of pieces from API, Chandler, AMS-Neve, Great River, GML, Buzz, Korby, Royer, Soundelux and many more, a few vintage pieces as well.
There is no charge for this and no commitment to buy anything.
No sales tricks or "closers" either.
please feel free to contact me through gearslutz or at
jeffrey@vintageking.com

best!

Jeff made me the same offer too. Now that's service! Bought my API 3124+ from Vintage King and it was a great deal and stellar service. I use that API just about every day and it's amazing on drums, vocals, guitars, synths....

!!!!!!!!!

Sonikwire is an amazing studio with the most incredible selection of gear & mics. Jason, you might remember I did an album there with Sue Paine last year....
