A fet 47 doesn't worth $3k or $4k I paid $1500dls. 2 years ago for a pristine U47fet (well actually €1100 Euros). Yes, it sounds great but you can buy something better for $4000 dls. ![]() OOP.

| I've got both and I find the 47 tube is wide and presents a large range of overtones. The 47fet is a narrower and displays the fundamental (especially the lower fundamentals) clearer without as much extra information.

both of these are great mics in their own right but i must say that i do love the harmonic content in the u47 tube.

$3500 to $4K is too much. Many of the 47Fets out there are completely hammered (been in front of kick drums for years!) For $3000 and change you can get this: Wunder CM7GT

While it's not a "Neumann" and it doesn't have "47" [seemingly the answer to the universe on GS] the Crowley & Tripp "el diablo" was tuned to be remarkably similar to the combination of a 421 and 47 FET when placed inside a kik drum [yes, a ribbon mic inside a kik drum... it can work!!]. On other instruments it does exceptionally well without the midrange "honk" often associated with a FET 47... at $2,750, it might be worth consideration... but as always, YMMV. Peace.

Also, don't forget that the price of most desirable vintage gear has skyrocketed in the last couple years. (EQP 1 for $7k, anyone?) What you could buy for €1100 two years ago may not necessarily be available now for the same amount of money. A piece is worth what it goes for in the free market. If that price is not worth it to you, then that's another story. Congrats on your fet 47! Ed

No one's going to argue it's not a great mic or that it doesn't have something special. But as we've seen the market can push things to a price-level that many people find unreasonable. At this point the price exceeds the item's desireability or functionality for a lot of people, especially when there are other things you can spend your money on that can bring you more value for the buck. When the FET 47 was new at $750 it was worth it. When it hit $1700 it was still worth it. Even $2400 might get me to buy a nice one. But above that, the price sensitivity kicks in. I mean, some people would be willing to pay $2000 for an original blackface Fender Twin Reverb. I'd use the same money to buy a reissue amp AND a guitar. Corona beer just went up to $9 per 6-pack at my local store. I have stopped buying it and switched to Sol (same company that makes Dos Equis) at $6.69. It's even better than Corona. I bought Corona when it was $2.50 down in Texas in the 80's before it was nationally marketed and you couldn't even get it in most places. Up until recently, I was willing to pay $7. Then it went to $8 and it started bothering me, but I reluctantly still bought it. When it hit $9, I said, "That's it. Forget it!" Good thing because I discovered a better beer in the process. |

I believe U 47 FET (and all "classic" mic) prices are going to take huge jump upward in price as baby boomer doctor / lawyer "musicians" retire from their day gigs and start spending serious coin on collectable guitars and mics. You think the run up in prices since the late seventies were something? Just wait ; ) The empirical evidence is out there - working engineers buy one or two Neumann mics client draws then bulk up their lockers with mod'd low cost mics. |

These prices are just insane ! Thanks god, prices here in europe are a bit more realistic although still a bit too high... For example, one shouldn't pay more than 2000€ for a U47Fet and 1500€ for a pair of KM84. Yet some are still trying to sky rocket these prices...

I agree w/ Michael, let the rich collectors w/ out a clue think they're buying some magic bullet have the old Fet 47's for too much money. there are plenty of other good [& affordable] mics out there to get the job done.Bock,Wunder,Violet,Jolymod etc |

There is no doubt a major appeal with the name and collectors value. However, when it comes to recording, there are brands like the ones mentioned in the quote above (and more) that get just as good results (if not better in some applications) and are much more reliable. Tools can be had for cheaper! Collector's items get really expensive.

There are a lot of new mics today that sound great. I'm sure you could find very capable alternatives for all the "classics" without breaking the bank. I've heard the Bock and it sounds great on kick. I haven't heard the Wunder, but judging by Mike's other products (and RB's ears), I'm sure it delivers. A big part of buying a vintage mic - especially these days - is WANTING to get a vintage mic. I paid $4500 for my U47Fet. About 1K more than usual. Main reason being its in like-new condition which is quite rare for these often abused mics. I love it. But I don't think I NEED it in order to get a great kick or bass sound. Again, with vintage mics its not a NEED. Its a WANT. ps. It sounds pretty phenomenal on Bass though |

| I've got one and I love it . I purchased it of a friend a couple of years back for a great price 1000 euro its in good condition and works fine a little dent on the grill but very rarely do you find an old mic without one . its great for thickening up thin weedy vocals just sounds great . its not as versatile as some modern mics but its got a character which I find a lot of modern mics haven't. i wont ever sell it even when I retire why ? simple as some of the other posts mentioned ill leave my mic collection to my kids that why I do believe they will be over inflated because of old farts like me . |

I'm the owner of this U497. It just sold directly for €3500 (That's $5k minus the eBay fees). Great mic, great character. Soundwise it's somewhere between a U47fet and a U77 (early t-powered version of the U87). Much more suitable for vocals than a U47fet, but on the other hand it still rocks on typical U47 fet duties like upright bass. Why I sold such a pretty thing? I want to become a collector with cupboards full of gear I don't use. Keeping my U47 and M49 though.. Thx Michael |
